I have a tag for unit 65 and would be interested in what kind of bucks I should expect to see. I spoke with the biologist from the area, and he had good things to say, but it's always nice to hear from guys that have hunted it. Any information on where to start scouting would be much appreciated. I will be hunting the second season. The biologist said that the majority of hunters hunt in the vicinity around Silverjack Reservoir. Have the deer migrated down out of the highcountry by November 1st. Any Information at all would be appreciated. [email protected]

Thanks in advance

I not familiar with GMU 65, but I can tell you that the deer should be at lower elevations by Nov 1st. I've even had some bucks in my backyard this past week (7500'). You might consider Owl Creek Pass for some scouting. It's east of hwy 550 between Montrose and Ridgway. There is also FS access farther south near Ouray. Good luck.

Silverjack is b-4 Owl Creek pass. There is also some decent deer hunting around Dallas Divide, just outside of Ridgway. All of the land on the lower ends heading in is predominantly private, but there are some good bucks farther up. Wilson Mesa is a good starting point. Good Luck.

Isn't Owl creek pass at a pretty high elevation. Where is Wilson Mesa located at. If Im hunting deer would I be an idiot not to purchase an elk tag, or are their not to many elk in this area. An elk tag will cost me a pretty penny, since I'm a non resident.

Thanks again for the info

Cooter -

Could you tell me if Wilson Mesa would also be good for elk? I ended up with one of the 237 leftover cow tags for GMU 65 (elk only season) and am trying to do some internet scouting before I make the trip. I have been thinking of the area S. of Silver Jack Res. and along the wilderness boundary. Appreciate any info you might have on elk if you don't mind sharing on the mule deer site. My e-mail is [email protected] if you are inclined to pass on any info, and I appreciate your time in doing so.

Thanks.
