This will be my girlfriends third year hunting. We have been hunting on the Tooele side of the Oquirrh Mts. She has yet to get a buck. Although she had a shot opening mornig of her first hunt.
My question is would anyone be willing to share an area that she might have a shot at a buck? Not looking for a monster just any legal buck. She is getting quite discouraged and doesn't know if she will hunt next year. I really want to get her a deer this year . Any suggestions will be helpful. By the way it will be the rifle hunt.
Thanks

Wish I could help, but I'm not in Utah.

Spend some time scouting. I used to hunt the central unit and never had much difficulty finding small bucks. I don't know how it is up your way, but the SE unit seems to have plenty of little bucks this year. Hopefully some will be left when the shooting is done.

Try Big Canyon behind Lake Point. It is in the same vicinity that you have been hunting. You shouldn't have much trouble finding something there. I believe the road is closed to motorized travel now. If that is the case it should be better than I remember it. Good luck.

utah450,
"Plenty of little bucks. Hopefully some are left when the shooting is done." OUCH! You aren't suggesting that there are only small bucks in central Utah I hope. There are 30" bucks abound if you look. Or, atleast that is what I am told. Some left after the shooting? Are you referring to the more tags than deer scenario? Please god, SFW, or DWR, help us now!

Thanks for the replies. Ktc we will definitely give it a look. That would be good if the road is closed. We'd like to get away from as many people as possible.

How far is your girlfriend willing to hike? If you really want to see a lot of deer, including small bucks then try Hickman canyon, it is in the Stansbury range. From Tooele it takes about 20-25 minutes. Drive up hickman, the road forks take the right fork toward boxelder, they have limited how far four wheelers can go, so you have to hike a bit further. Go as far as the road takes you and then hike East about half way up the mountain from the Pass leading over into Boxelder, Then walk south passing through two or three draws. Sit and wait and she'll definitely get a shot at something. You'll also see a lot of hunters, but two points abound. The hike really isn't very far either, if you have a four wheeler or motorcylce.

Good luck

Being from Tooele... and shooting at any legal buck the 1st 6 or 7 years I hunted, I might be able to help you. If you haven't already checked out Big Canyon behind Lakepoint, stay the hell away from it. LOL. A friend and I packed up from the bottom thinking the same idea, but since it was burned, it still lacks any good vegetation in it and we saw one small 3-pt, for an 8 hour hike. No way I'd do that again. I do like the Hickman idea, plenty of small bucks over that way without too much work. And if your willing to get up to those high pine filled basins, a lot of nice bucks over that way too. As with a lot of pressure. I would also recommend Settlement Canyon, due west of the reservoir, if you get back up in those canyons and even cross over occasionally, I used to always find little bucks with 20 minutes of the road. Also, left hand Settlement or "girl scout" has always had a plethora of little critters. These ideas have in mind that you don't intend to hike very far and are willing to shoot the 1st 2 point you see. As mentioned also, plenty of good bucks hiding in the tops of almost every mountain around Tooele... just gotta know where to look. Good luck with that and let us know how she does.
