Whitetail hunters count every point they can. But how many of you muley hunters out there count the eyeguards. If you have 4x4 with eyeguards is he a 5 point? Is a forkhorn with eyeguards a 3x3? Not every deer has eyeguards. So do you count them? Let's take a count of those who do and those who don't.

WELL I DON'T BUT

IT'S GETTING SO BAD PEOPLE ARE STARTING TO COUNT THE ROUGH NUBS AROUND THE BASES!!!

YA,IF IT'S AN 1/8" LONG ITS A LEAGAL POINT IN UTAH!!!

WE AIN'T FROM TEXAS AND WE DON'T HAVE TO COUNT EVERY NUB!!!(SORRY ALLEN & DRUM!!!)

3" + BROW TINES ARE LIKE DD'S,THERE NICE BUT NOT MANY AROUND,KNOW WHAT I MEAN???

THE ONLY bobcat THINKING IF THEY'RE BIG ENOUGH THEY DO DESERVE A STARE,EVEN IF THEY ARE JUST A 2 POINT!!!

In California any points in the upper 2/3rd is a antler point everything else is an eye guard! the point has to be longer than wide to count!(most think if you can hang a ring on it that counts WRONG!).
I count western, antler points only no eye guards!

Since not all deer have eyeguards, I count them. Points are points in my book. If talking about a 4x4 with eyeguards, that's what I would call it, "a 4x4 with eyeguards".
However, when talking about a buck with many points, I would probably include eyeguards as points and just say 8x9, 9x10, etc. Because when they have that many points, who cares if they're eyeguards, cheaters, etc.?

I usually count along with the record books. They count every point including eyegaurds. But I'm with Founder. I usually say 4-point with eyeguards until you get up above 6 points or so.

I have never counted eyeguards. When I was growing-up, a 2x2 was a 2-point, a 3x3 was a 3-point, a 4x4 was a 4-point, etc, etc.... If someone got one with more points on one side then on the other, we would call it a 2x3, 3x4, 4x5, etc....

I've never been one to measure for the books, so I guess if your used to doing that then I can see where you might be in the habit of counting them.

My $.02...

I don't count them until they are nontypicals, otherwise, they just get honorable mention. Pretty much what has been stated above.

I agree with Founder....a points a point. It's a 4x4 w/eyeguards until you get into more points. It's all in the terminalogy.

i don't count'em, but here's the way it is in washington...

I'm also w/ founder. However, if I see a BIG two point (Saw a 25" 2X2 two years ago bow hunting w/ a friend), I'll count the eyeguards if they're an inch long. That way he's legal!

I've noticed that the terminology changes depending on the state you hunt in.

AZ- a buck with four on each side with eye guards = Four Point
NM- a buck with four on each side with eye guards = 10 pointer
Back east- a buck with four on each side with eye guards = 10 pointer
UT- a buck with four on each side with eye guards = A 200" buck :)

I guess in CA this shed is only a 4 point.:)

If it is over an inch, I call every point a point on a nontypical but I call a Typical 4 point with eyeguards just a 4 point. In BC, we have 4 point or better seasons and eyeguards don't count in the point count.

BC YOUR RIGHT! IN CA. THATS A FOUR POINT WITH EYE GUARDS!
I found a 3 pt blacktail shed like that once!

I don't count eye guards.

As with BCboy ... a 4 point buck typically is a 4x4 with or without eyeguards.

No Eyeguards. A slick TWO. THis guy better keep his head low int his state. Somebody is looking for some "jailtime"
