BADLANDS PACKS

Anyone use the superday pack or the stealth rt day pack?? I have a few questions:

Will a spotting scope (nikon xl) and tripod fit good. How's the hydration pocket, will it accomadate the camel back bladders? Is the waist belt comfortable or too padded. Is the back insert bothersome? Is it difficult to lash a quarter to it??

Some have recommended a badlands 2200 and I think its too much for my stile of hunting...so it will most likely be one of the above.

I have already tested the cabela's bow / rifle pack, the crooked horn master guide, and a wal-mart special. Once I have the badlands, I will make my choice and send the others back.

Thanks in advance.....

If I were you I would spend the extra money and get the 2200. It is compact enough for a day trip and at the same time I can carry everything I need for a spike camp if I want to. Also, plenty of room for the bow, muzzleloader, camera, spotting scope, tripod, etc. Very comfortable pack. If you live near Salt Lake you can go down to their shop and possibly get a better deal on last years model or a slightly flawed model. Just a suggestion.

Just curious, but how does the Bow/Rifle Pack fit? I took the 2in1 Cabela's pack on a scouting trip, and noticed, that it rode REALLY low on me. I had to hook my thumbs on the shoulder straps all day to keep the weight closer to my back, and hanging down on my hips.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-01-04 AT 08:24PM (MST)[p]I have used the stealth that has the spring fold over type top small pouch in front big main bag etc etc pack for two years now ...I can fit my 15 & 10 binos in the small pouch and my tripod straps to the pack with the top strap while the bottom bow strap goes over the legs holding the tripod steady and not flopping around. I think this is the most comfortable and useful pack I have ever owned plus how can you beat the lifetime no questions asked warranty?.... Allen Taylor......

I have the 2800 and it is pretty compact w/o a lot of gear. but you have the option for extra gear/meat. My only complaint would be that the two outside pockets are shaped upside down. The bottom of the pocket is just too narrow and slightly small to get the zipper around anything good(water bottle, med. size spotting scope). But it is comfortable as they get.

5 point,

I bought the Superday Pack last year and it seems to be everything I need. It is extremely well made,& bigger than I thought it would be. I carry everything but the kitchen sink in mine, including a Nikon XL spotter & tripod. It is pretty comfortable, even loaded down, after you get the adjustments made to the straps like you need em. The only complaint I have with it is the water bottle holders absolutely suck. I usually carry 2-20oz water bottles and as long as they are full, no problem. If they are anything less than full, they fall out of the holders. No problem if you are walking in a straight line on a flat surface, up and down = big problemo! I hope this helps.

MichaelJ,

The cabelas pack didn't hang low. The straps were good and offered good adjustment. Good spot for water hydration bladder, good belt. Excellent space not limited by pockets dreamed up by some designer who doesn't hunt. The bow / rifle holder was a good design, but not for me. I like to hold me rifle or bow in hand. Material was nice and quiet. If you have any more questions, let me know. I am sending it back tomorrow. If you want me to check anything out on it I can.

I found that same deal but after research I decided on the 2200 in the 2004 model. I believe the 2004 model has bigger side pockets for spotting scope and tripod and doesn't have the split waist belt. I was able to get the 2004 model from www.alpinerange.com for $139.95. They only show the 2003 model in their add but I called them and they are ordering me a 2004 model for the same price. The 2004 model is on backorder so it won't ship for another week or so but the company was willing to ship me the 2003 model to use until the 2004 model ships. I declined since I don't have any hunting trips for a few weeks.

How tall our you, and what do you weight? Just curious. Also, did you ever load it w/ a lot of gear, and hike around, or just put it on, and tried it around the house. Thanks a ton. As we'll have a REALLY hard hike to our camp (which would be nice to put my rifle in the holder), then I'll be using it as a day pack. Is there anyway I could strap a sleeping bag to it? Or is that out of the question? Thanks.

MichaelJ,

I am 6'2" and go 220, I'm a blue eyed gemini and enjoy long stalks and capfires. J/k

This might be the rig for you, I had the 100 oz camel back full of water, and all my crap (scope, tripos, bino's, rangefinder, extra survival stuff, saw kit etc etc). It rode nice and not too low like the crooked horn. The sternum strap was good and he belt caught my hips with a little adjustment. Attaching a sleeping bag shouldn't a problem, and the outter shell is removable to use as a small day pack (real small). The pack itself is a good size for day hikes with all the nonsense I carry around. The rifle bow holder was also better than I thought it would be.....

The main compartment is one big open area and that kinda did it in for me. I like to have everything in its place, not free for alled in one big bag. JMHO...

Hope this helps.

Did you happen to read badlands warranty policy? This is a great company...............

No other manufacturer in the industry will provide this level of protection.

Simply clean your pack or product (but DO NOT put it in your washing machine, ever) and call us at 800-386-7839 to obtain a return authorization number."

I have the Badlands 2200 and love it. Also have the Masterguide pack by Crooked Horn. The Masterguide pack is a rugged pack with great waterbottle pockets and tripod pocket. However, the pack has no internal fram and thus rides very low on my back. It's very uncomfortable on the shoulders with heavy loads over long disances. The Badlands 2200, due to the internal aluminum stays, rides on up where its supposed to. I have put a lot of miles on the 2200 and packed out a lot of meat plus my regular gear. I can strap my tripod w/head on the out side middle of the pack, hydration bladder in one of the bat wings, 15X56's in the main compartment and whatever other gear for the day. I didn't like one of the web straps on the hip belt when I first bought the pack. I sent the pack back to Badlands and the configued it the way I wanted at no cost. They were extremly helpful and aimed to please. I plan on putting many more miles on this pack.

PnM, is the 2200 big enough in your opinion to pack in enough gear for a 3 1/2 day hunt? I'm talking like strapping on a sleeping bag, 3lb tent, .10 oz. sleeping pad...etc We also have a really big pack that we are going to take as well. I think we should have enough room between the two packs to have enough gear for a couple of days of high country hunting.

I use a badlands 2200 and that is a great pack. Is what I do is carry my tent bag and sleeping pad with clothes in a Compression Sack and with the sack you can get everything down to a very small size and carry it with the bottom straps, and that leaves you with more then enough room for other stuff in you pack.

I really like the badlands pack my brother bought one last year and I opted for the crooked horn I stuffed the hell out of his pack and kept only the essentials for myself. He may have a slightly different opinion but he is ten years younger than me so i kinda figured this evened us out.

I've ordered the 4500 and it should be here next week--everyone has positive comments about their stuff--chris

Well, I decided to get the 03' 2200 for $100 thanks to Five_Point's links! Thank you BTW! From what I can see, it's a GREAT looking pack, and is definately big enough for what I need. Very organized, and I'm surprised by all the pockets it has. Great Pack for the money. I've yet to load it up, but it seems like it'll hold everything NO PROB!

Michael~All Gods creatures welcome... right next to the mashed potatoes and gravy.

MichaelJ, I don't think the 2200 is big enough for a 3 day hunt. Especially with the glassing equipment I carry. Maybe an overnighter.

Good news spreads fast...JUST ORDERED ONE TOO!!!
2003, Badlands 2200 from Five Points link also...
Thanks Again,

Chef

Chef, you'll love it! LOTS OF ROOM! Especially for only having 2200 Cu In. of space. My other pack that 2250 total, and this pack is much bigger. You can store a whole lot more, and it's got great adjustment. Very happy w/ mine so far.

COSA,

The 2800 is the split design one, correct? Is that a worthwhile feature? I like the idea of more capacity than the 2200 but don't want to go all the way to the 4500. Just wondering.

Recieved a call this morning about the '03 2200 order I put in yesterday. Seems like he's still waiting on his shipment in about 4 days. I told them I had a hunt first of October and he said if he doesn't get his shipment in soon we might work something out on the '04 model.

Had a simular problem with the superday. Seems these things fly off the shelf, so backordering seems to be an issue...Not very good capitalization on supply and demand. I called and asked where it was and he explained and told me he was shipping ecerything ups blue to make up for the delay.

I really don't mind as long as the packs are as good as everyone is claiming.

I spoke with a Badlands rep on Monday and she said they were expecting a shipment in this week, but that everything in the shipment was spoken for and that if a person wanted an item it would be best to find it from one of their dealers, if you could--especially if you were going on an early Oct. hunt---

they increase the amount of product every year 40% to try and keep ahead of the consumer--they just can't keep ahead of the consumer at this point--they sell out of the stuff immediately, as it's a wanted item with a great warranty---

the 4500 has a removable back pack and fanny pack---chris

Just curious... But if they always run out of supply, why is it that they still have 03' 2200's for sale?

Michael~All Gods creatures welcome... right next to the mashed potatoes and gravy.

I think they make them in batches and they sell quick until hunting season. At that time their production catches up to demand and they will have some surplus. As the year turns and they contnue to update the cylce starts all over again as people upgrade to the new model year, the older model (that was good enough last year) becomes available as a sale item.

Either way it makes for good deals for people who want the 2200. I on the other hand wante dthe super day (04), and those are out of stock. Fibgers are crossed for Monday.

I used the 2800 this weekend on a elk hunt and liked it, but add two things. First water pouches on the outsides so I dont have to unzip the pack to get a drink, second and a small pocket inside for license etc. The pack rides great, and the quality is superb. Russ, PS its not big enough for three days of backpacking IMO.

I'm pretty sure they have water bladders available for that pack--they have it for the 4500 model(95oz.)--in fact the bladder showed up today--they also make a 100oz. bladder, so I'd think one of these should fit--chris

Just had the superday delivered and my first impression is this is a excellently crafted pack. I haven't taken it apart yet or had a chance to stuff all my crap in it, but I might have a winner. I like the weight and feel of the straps, the small pockets look handy, and their seems to be a lot of compression built in for cinching down the load. I was wondering where the water bladder goes. I don't see any holes in teh top for a tube to come out. Also the pocket I believe was intended for the bladder seems a bit small. I agree that a internal zipper pocket would be great for license and keys. I can't wait to load it up and give it a try tonight.....

The bladder goes in the that top sliky pocket inside the pack, and i have found the Platypus Big-Zip Hoser - 2-Liter Reservoir Works great with it and it's easy to clean and you dont get that plastic taste with your water. I am able to keep my bladder and filter all in that pocket alone.

Thanks Flight,

I just got the camelbak 100 0z res. for my superday. I also bought the neoprene covered tube to prevent freezing. I put it in the zippered pouch that sits against my back leaving the other pocket for my spotter. I ran the tube under he laterial in the strap and it works great.

Great pack.

got my 4500 the other day and started piling the stuff in it--looks like my 95oz bladder fits in the detachable backpack--but I need to peruse this baby more--it's funny you look at something and check it out and a 1/2 hour later you find a pocket here and then another--pack feels good, but I don't have it totally loaded yet---chris

I just bought a 2200 last week. All I can say is WOW!!! I loaded it up the other day and went on a morning hunt. I foregot it was even there. It rode higher than my old pack (Wal-Mart's finest).

The one question that I have is what hydration system fits in the square holder?
Henry

They make one specifically for the Badlands 2200, it is a 95 OZ. I purchased mine when I bought my 2200 which I just received last week. It was $19.95 for the bladder.
I also love my pack. I filled it up as heavy as I could with my gear, spotting scope and tripod and wore it around for a while. Very comfortable and you are right it rides high and is easily adjustable to shift where you want the weight to ride.

I love the construction of my "superday". I got it loaded up but haven't taken it out. I just got shipped off to Michigan (where I sit during a seminar not paying attention). Hopefully when I get back I can get out. I went to REI and bought the camelback (100 0z) and itfit great, another great feature is the neoprene hose sleeve that helps keep your liquids from freezing....
