I was down in the parachute area working yesterday and couldn't help but notice that the country there looks like awesome mule deer habitat, has anyone here hunted that area? How hard is it for a non resident to get a tag? I'd appreciate any info that you guys would be willing to share. If you don't want to post it here you can email me at [email protected]

Go to the "Search" tab at the top of forum amd type in Beanman. It will take you to a number of threads he has posted and you can send him an e-mail or PM here on MM.
His name is Fred and lives around that area.

Chester,

I live about 40 miles west of Parachute in Palisade, Colorado. Unit 42, on the south side of I-70 is a pretty easy draw. It is combined with units 421, and 41. I live in 41 and drew it this year with no points. In years past I have drawn it as a second choice about 50% of the time. There can be some good deer in the unit, especially late and if it snows.

You would probably draw it with no points and for sure with 1.

I've never hunted the north side of I-70 at Parachute so I won't comment about that unit.

cheers,

Thanks for in info Beanman. Thats just what I wanted to hear. I have a couple more questions for you. How hard is it to get access to the areas south of I-70 I ask because it looks like there is a lot of private land there. Also what is the unit number for the area north of the interstate? Thanks again for the info.

I hunted in there last year and there is a lot of checker board land around so you have to watch out. They don't have to have signs or even a fence so study your map well. We did take four bucks out of there should of had five.

Chester,

The unit on the north is 32. I've only hiked around in 42 up on the Battlement Mesa, never hunted it since I hunt 41 on the same tag. There is a map program that shows private vs public land. The map resolution sucks but I don't know of another program that does this. It is called State explorer BLM

I have hunted area 32 about four times, from the mid to late 90's.We payed a small fee to hunt on private land up Parachute creek. The land owner sold the property and we lost the hunting rights.EXCELLANT deer hunting we killed several bucks in the 170-180 class.Lots of deer in that country, i would love to find another lease in that area especially with it being a fairly easy draw. I've got 4 pref. points for deer and 9 for elk that are burning a hole in my pocket, maybe next year.

Good luck Bruce
