I'll be hunting a ranch in Armstrong Co. the last few days in November. The ranch butts up to the Palo Duro. Anyone have any insight as to what I should expect for quality and quantity? Should I hold out for something special, or take the first respectable buck I see? Thanks.

I have only hunted around there once and it was on a smaller ranch owned by Bill Carthell? Something like silver cloud ranch. I couldnt find any bucks over 20" or so on his ranch. There is the potential but someone like Huntsonora or another Texan that has spent more time in the area especially on a larger and quality managed ranch may be able to help you out.......Hope you kill a big one...... Allen Taylor......

Every once in a while, someone will kill a BIG buck out of the counties surrounding the canyon, but for the most part, personally I would shoot the first 150 class buck you see cuz that is as big as alot of them get up there. I have hunted in that same area several times and have never seen a huge deer by anyone's standards. One of my good friends owns a ranch that borders the Palo Duro Canyon State Park and the best he has ever killed is a 154.. Now the Whitetails up there are a diffrent story all together!!! Huge Whiteys up there!! Good luck on your hunt. I'll be in that part of the country in about 25 days on my antelope hunt in Hartley county.

Go to the Texas Big Game Awards web site and there is a bunch of pics of deer from that region that were big enough to quailfy for the awards program. Good site for sure for a refrence on the qualty of bucks up there.

Thanks guys. I sent huntsonora a PM. This ranch manages only for 5.5 yr old or better bucks and has been under trophy management for many years. I hope that makes a difference.

Wow, I looked at the Texas Big Game Awards site. There were lots of 160-170 bucks from the region. Even several 180-190 bucks. Better than I thought.

I killed a 150 class buck in 2001 up around Pampa on a freebie hunt.
