My luck can't be any worse

Went out this past week (Utah) and tried a new area where I had seen a dandy buck last year, off the side of the road while driving at night. I set out a few hours before dark on Wednesday night, just to glass around and get somewhat familiar with the area. I was on my way back to my truck and I spotted two deer about 100 yards below me feeding in some buck brush. I instanly spotted horns...I watched to see what direction the bucks were feeding and attempted try and get in front of them and cut them off.

I high tailed it back and around, and slowly crept up over the hill, and sure enough they were standing about 55 yards below me in the sage brush. The two bucks I had originally spotted were standing in the open...decent 4 points, but nothing I wanted to shoot. I spotted some movement behind them in the brush and about that time another buck walked stepped out...and I almost couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was one of those moments, which don't happen too often, when you see the buck you dream of seeing out in the field....and he's standing downhill about 55 yards from you. He was standing broadside, and when I first glanced at him I thought something didn't seem quite right. I drew back my bow and the big boy caught my movement...he turned and looked my direction and my heart sank. This big ol boy only had one side. I was ready to take the shot, but decided not to shoot.
The other two bucks were probably in the 140's-150's range and he put them to shame. His left side was a typical four, long main beams, great mass, and great height. Forks were probably 10-11'' deep, front and back. If he would have had the same on his right side, he probably would of went somewhere in the 190's.

I couldn't believe it. Still can't! I have the worst luck!!

Anyone ever have a similiar experience?

Man, count your good luck of seeing such a creature. I would have let fly. It would have been a cool mount.

Great story! Shows how fast a dream can turn into a nightmare. If he survives this year he'll be a bruiser next year... and you know his address!!!

Good Point OakBuck. I'd say keep tabs on the buck, and try to figure out his habits, an nail em next year.

Michael~All Gods creatures welcome... right next to the mashed potatoes and gravy.

Several years ago, I filled a tag in southern Utah on the last evening of my rifle hunt. I was looking at a bedded forked horn buck that was broadside when I took the shot at about 300 yards. As I approached the buck, I had to stop and take a closer look, because I thought I shot a doe! Then I realized the buck had only one 4 point antler on his left side! So the "forky" was actually a 4 x zero, with nothing more than a dent in his skull on the right side...weird for sure! My buddy teased me and said it was a half-assed deer for a half-assed deer hunter! Needless to say, it was great trout fishing the next day!

Longrifle 1, out!

I've got a horn mount of a Whitetail I shot for a wall hanger. But when I got to him his right side was only three small abnormal points, left side was a huge 4 point with lots of mass. What a shame the big ones have to mess up their racks. Oh Well, there's always another one somewhere, I just have to keep looking until I find him.

Here's a buck my son shot a few years ago. He had seen the buck a few days before and then got in on him. He was a "4 x4" but the one side is a big drop ball and three points sticking straight up. I think he's cool. I probably would have shot the deer you saw. Did he have nothing at all on the other side?

That's definitely a unique looking buck Bighorn. I have seen a couple like that over the years. The big boy I saw didn't have anything on the other side. I think I've replayed the whole thing about a million times in my head!!

But, If he makes it through next year...I'll be back!
