Hunting in high winds/storms

Just curious if the deer just bed down during the windy times or what? I didn't see any deer on Sunday and it was very windy. I'm hunting sage brush country. I had probably seen 40 on Saturday in a normal hot day. Thanks - Brian

Deer are like hunters, they don't like it. Because the sense of smell is a major factor in how they detect all kinds of trouble. They don't like it if it blows real hard or storming real bad. They will find a place where they can hunker down, where they feel safe. Where they can see danger coming. Unless the rut is on or they are real hungry they will try sit it out. Hunting is always better just before or right after a major storm. Good Huntin,

in my experience, they tend to disappear from the open when the wind is howling. if you're hunting open sage country, not a bad day to do something else. between deer going into hiding, and the fact shots tend to be long in that country, its just not the best day to hunt. (long shots and a 40 mph wind is tough, i dont care who you are) of course, if your hunting days are limited, you just have to make the best of it.

Brian here is my advice. I archery hunt bucks in sage and have only been doing it for my 4th year now for archery. I have taken 3 nice bucks but in that time I spend more time in the desert than the average joe.
I like hunting in the wind. The nastier the better. Hinders noise from you and lets you move a little freely. If you are looking for them deer you saw find some crags in rock. Little canyons out of the wind. I have seen the deer travel up to 3 miles for places like this. I even saw bucks on open side of sheet grass hills on the opposite side of the wind. Back to the wind so they can see away from them.
Thay will hold alot tighter in the wind due to there senses are being played with. I feel they will do this unless they see immediate danger.
Just my thoughts in the area's I hunt.

Hey Brian your not from Idaho are you? It was windy here sunday, also.

I would second what others have said...it isn't the best time to spot deer but it is a good time to sneak around and find them. I missed the opportunity on a big buck who was bedded on the calm side of a very steep hill. I did not expect the buck to be there as it is a general hunting area and the second week of season and I was within a rifle shot of the public road my 4 wheeler was parked on. I was headed to "where the deer are" and this big 4 point jumps up and was gone.

Next time we get a good wind storm during the season, I know where I will be looking!

Good hunting.
