wondering if anyone hunts the sandhills of souteast new mexico. i will be hunting there for the 1st time in 3-4 years and need some info on how to go on about hunting these deer in the sands any info woul be appreciated. good luck to you all on your hunts this year.

If you have hunted the sand hills before then you know how few deer there are here. The deer numbers havent changed for the better. A good spot is around the Tucker Ranch near the praire chicken refuge around Milnesand. Thats all Im giving you for my hunting ground is near that area. Watch for those rattlers

Notice "Drum " didnt respond to your post or anybody else for that matter. Ol "Drum" lost his million acre lease in New Mexico sandhill region. Kinda hard to loose something you never had in the first place.
There are some deer but they get hammered by everybody and there dog . Go scout hard .

im going to be hunting during the first hunt during the week that way the pressure wont be that bad. ill also be hunting west of 529 or northwest og maljamar.

as with most places, get out of the truck and away from the roads - we mostly do lots of walking trying to cut tracks. I killed a 30" buck west of Jal 2 years ago in the sandhills while tracking and saw 4 other respectable bucks (165" class). Just this past year I saw 190" class buck beside the road in the sandhills east of Roswell while coming home from a mountain lion hunt - this was in January so he's still out there. We have about 200 sections leased up in the sandhills across the state line in Texas and we walk 10-15 miles/day trying to cut tracks. the sandhills of New Mexico are hunted fairly hard but mostly by guys with a Bud in one hand and a thutty-thutty in the other. there's alot of fairly roadless areas northwest of Jal that aren't pressured too bad and have some nice bucks - didn't hunt out there last year and won't this year because we've drawn good tags but will be back in the future if we strike out on drawing tags. We've killed some tremendous bucks on the Texas side and if the buck can get some age they should grow the same on the N.M. side. Good luck and post some pics if successful - always like seeing pics of the sandhill deer - they can get freakin' huge!

Hey hunttx,

I saw that you kind of use the OTC units as back up for when you don't draw tags. Unfortunately, I've heard that the entire state is going to drawing next year. Anybody else hear anything about that? Every time I try to get on New Mexico's website, it's down.

I've never hunted the sandhills, I've hunted 30 the last two years. But I've seen a lot of bucks in the back of trucks coming out of the sanhills, so I know they're out there. Good luck to everyone this season. Only about 37 more days 'til I leave.

WH- try this link they moved.... http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us/

And yes they are going to an all out draw starting next year also dont forget about the point restrictions starting this year either... From what I have heard if you know somebody with land you can still get a tag but you can only hunt on that persons land.
