About 11:00am today (Tues) in Spanish Fork I saw a DWR truck go by with several elk racks in it, including one very large head. I was just wondering if these were poached. Has anyone heard of anything like that happening?

I hope not! It seems every year some jerk offs kill mature bulls during the rifle deer and elk hunts. I just don't get it! Hopefully they were just sheds or something.

Every year the DWR Pick up large elk and deer racks from just the hunts alone.... they are either poached or shot and not found .. I know that two weeks ago they had found 8 large elk racks on Monroe... 6 killed with a rifle and 2 from archery...the DWR officer also said that if they could stop the poaching on Monroe they could double the permits Issued on the Elk hunt.

Now THAT'S sickening to think about!!

And that's just ONE unit...factor in all the others and grab your puke bag!!

PRO may know some official estimate's from the DWR on this issue, maybe he'll see this and respond.
It kinda goes along with a conversation he & i had yesterday on how they figure the tags for each LE unit.

Any insight pro??

Slamdunk, I have my suspicions, but I have no actual numbers, just suffice it to say the Monroe is not unique with this problem. Most poached deer/elk never get found, little lone find the SOB's that did it. Those in the hills are the ones that MUST step up and take a more active part in stopping this, it is STEALING from us and future generations.

Sorry slamdunk, I am 'insightless' today.

I used to hunt Monroe's wintering grounds years ago, and it would never fail, I would find poached deer all over, I even found a pile of 10-15 in one area, left to rott of course, it make me sick! I remember talking to a county worker who maintained the dirt roads in the area, I dont even want to repeat the horrors he would see. I think poaching in general is a plague that somehow needs to be stopped. It is decimating our herds!

I'm sure it would make us all sick enough to start a poacher busting maffia if we knew "the truth". }>

Once upon a time, long long ago, I did a paper for my Bachelor Degree. The figures then were that the discovered poachings were only about 3 percent of the actual illegal take.

Pretty sobering. I had a Pauns tag that year, and riding around with the local warden in preseason, we found a dump site with 32 carcasses, all minus the heads.

I guess some kid or party of shooters has been poaching the hell out of everything in parts of the NE region. We're talking over 70 deer alone. It makes me sick. That's why if I see something suspicious...I will report it.

Word I got is that there were 2 sets in the truck. THey got 2 6 points that were both from "fighting mortality" - unrelated incidents. One they found dead and the other was injured to the point that they had to put it down.

No poaching on those two - but I would love to know the number poached each year. I doubt there is ever going to be a way to know that number.

Don't forget guys and gals, according to the dude in the other thread, you should just mind your own business! Don't you dare call somebody out if you think they are doing something illegal.....
