We have 3 groups who all drew tags in area 6-rifle in Oct. All the partners are driving me nuts because we can't get our dates together. Some want to be there before opening day, others want to wait until second week when there is a full moon. I just want to HUNT! Only 2 wks to go and I am jones'in!

I have never hunted area 6 only antelope in area 7. So I am relying on these "experts" to get me to the spot. Some of our group has been hunting this area for 10-15 yrs. I am doing a bunch of research so I don't look like a green-horn too bad!

I hear Independance range is the place to be. Can anyone give me more specific location than just a range...it's huge!

Great info on all different topics from boots to pics...thanks ya'll

ive hunted area 6 4 out of the last 5 years and have taken several good bucks out of there if you want to hunt the independent range the saval area is a good area and so is the backside of jerrit canyon, and if you really want to walk go up to the top of jack creek and walk into some of the canyons there are some big ones there but they take forever to get out cause its pretty steep, also later in the season the tuscarora mountain range gets pretty good theres a canyon called packer canyon and ive got 3 really good bucks out of there.
hope this helps a little

O.K. I'm from Elko and if it is one thing I know about hunting mule deer it is that a full moon is a horrible time to hunt. Sure, the deer are more active but let's be logical about this. A full moon provides enough light for deer to feed and move all night. Deer are not stupid and especially the big ones. So if you hunt the full moon then most of the deer will be bedded down long before shooting light. So, unless you have the patience to hunt all day and glass for hours on end then don't hunt the full moon. Hit 6 opening day or the last week of the season. There are several good bucks up there so I wish you luck. There are several good deer in Saval this year. Wake up early and glass, don't skyline yourselves and you'll be fine. Do me a favor, if you see any coyotes take care of them for me. Merrit mountain north of wildhorse is usually a good area, get up there early if you are going there because it is a popular spot, I wouldn't recommend it past opening day. Good luck!

Got my 4x4 just s/w of Merrit Mtn back in 1989 during a snow storm. Not another hunter out there that morning either, just one crazy non-resident, me.

Thanks guys for all your tips. It sounds like we are on the right track. My partner loves Jack's creek and has been hunting there for years (when he draws of course). Your helpful tips will help expand our searches if it is too crowed.
These last few weeks until we leave are driving me nuts...I can't wait. I hunted whitetail in MI for years as a youngster, but let me tell you, there is nothing in this world like hunting the open country in the West...I am hooked for life.
I will let you know how it goes when we return. Any other tips would be much appreciated.

Thanks again.
