Not a monster muley but still huge

Here is a buck my son shot with a muzzleloader yesterday in Nevada. It's not what you'd call a monster muley but to me it's still HUGE. It was on one of the youth tags where the kids can hunt any open season in their unit with the legal weapon for that season. Yesterday was the last day of muzzleloader season. General season opens next weekend but we figured there would be less pressure during muzz season and it might work out better given our limitations. Anyway, we are pretty jazzed about it. It's his third deer but first with a muzz. Shot him at close to 100 yards with my inline 50 cal. Hit a little low first shot and we had to follow up and get close to him again to put in a finishing neck shot. This is a tough area and without using a quad we'd never have been able to get him to the deer. Sometimes lady luck smiles on us all.

Congrats to your son!! Looks like he is pretty happy with his first muzzy buck. Thanks for sharing the photos.

Congrats to your son, looks like a difficult place to get close enough to whack something with the muzz. Nice pictures.

Congratulations to your son on his Muzz Buck, I know that makes you happy at his success too.
Great pictures as well.

great job and congradulations to you and your son! I agree it does look like tough country to get close to the deer. Also looks like it would be a bit warm this time of year. Good job once again!

Carl,

Congrats to you and your son. Great buck, and a hard-earned one to boot. I'm heading down your way Thursday for my unit 171-173 hunt, and can hardly wait.

Congrats to you and your son. Nothing makes a smile except when a animal is down.

Congrats to NV and son. It looks like he did well and that country is pretty open for the smokepole. There's nothing like success!!

Congratulations to you and your son.
That hunt will last a lifetime for both of you in your memories.
Does look like some open country for sure.
Sounds like your son has one heck of a great father and vice versa.
Best,
Jerry

Congrats! Definitely a trophy. I've yet to even kill a muley buck (with a rifle no less), so your son getting this buck is absolutely a huge success. Looks like a tough place to get close enough to a buck to drop with a smoke pole. Congrats again!

All I have to say is your a STUD!!!! I don't know to many people who would be out in the hills in a wheel chair for a deer. We need more guys like you and more people like your dad to take people out. That's a nice buck, your right it's not a trophy but I know lots of people not in a wheel chair that can't kill a buck like that.

CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Great. job.. bigger than my first muzzy.... wait... I have never killed one with a muzzy..
good job.

Great Job! Looks like tough country to get within range, much less with a wheelchair no doubt! It's great that your so dedicated to your son. Congrats!

Congrats to you and your son . I'm sure it is a day neither of you will forget . That's what it is all about .

A mountain to one is either a silly mound or another's Everest. There is no value or virtue in trophy beyond the hunter's devise capability and foresight.

I've alwasy been able to get where my feet can take me, and never would be bashful about that or any deer.

Only retarded pride could do such a unnatural thing.

Great hunt, MEN.

Congrats. Looks like a trophy to me. Any buck taken fair chase is a trophy. Horn size is only one measure of a trophy. The story and memories a buck stirs up is more of a trophy. Looks like a great father/son hunt.

Big CONGRAT'S !!!!!!!! Reading this thread made my morning. Makes me that much more anxious to get in the field with my son. You two did good. :)

Thanks for all the kudos guys. We are still pretty happy about the hunt.

As for it being tough country to get close in, the country you see is not typical of the area. It's just a big open mountain top. You are just seeing about the ugliest part of it. Don't want it to look too good. :) We got lucky and found an area where there is a small amount of pressure in muzz and archery season so the deer were pretty cooperative. It's also an area that has pretty decent road access (not at all typical for that unit) so by using the 4 wheeler wisely we were able to get close enough. I know, I hate the damage the quads and atvs can do but for my son we don't have too many choices. We just stay on trails and try to be respectful of the land and others.

Funny, last week my son was in a class and they were asked to come up with a goal. His was that he wanted to shoot a record book muley (wonder where he got that). Sunday we go out and shoot this buck and he says "Just one step closer to my goal". Guess I've got my work cut out for me. Seriously, he has a great attitude and nothing ever gets him down. He loves the outdoors and wants to do the same things as anyone else. And we all try to not let anything stand in his way.

Thanks again.

Dang rights that a trophy buck. We all get caught up in the scoring of deer and how many inches of bone they have on there head, but there is a lot more to a trophy deer than antler score. Congrats on a fine animal.

Now that is definitely a trophy! Congratulations to both of you. Your son sounds like a heck of a great kid and you are one heck of a dad to have taken him out and help him on his hunt. That's what it's all about!

Thanks for the pictures and the story.

Nice job guys. You are an inspiration to us all. There will be many of us with an empty freezer this year. You story has set the bar high for the rest of us.

Conditions considered, that is a HUGE deer your son got, are you kidding? I bet he's smilin ear to ear and should be very proud of himself for his effort, perseverence, et. all. Mega Congratulations to both of you and thanks for postin.

Thanks for sharing and Congrats! My best hunts seem to be all the ones I have shared with my son. The "trophy" is the memories you both will have.

Looked like rough country to stalk a buck for sure.

Congratulations on a successful hunt. Meat in the freezer is always better than none. He's got plenty of years ahead of him to bag the record one. Like he said, just one step closer to his goal. Kudos to you, he has the opportunity to achieve that goal.

Congrats again!
