Hey guys, newly registered here, though I've been lurking for sometime.I truely enjoy the hunt stories and pics from so many different places.Hopefully I can post a pic soon as well!

Here's my story,I have a deer tag for Unit 65 for October 16, and will also purchase a bull Elk tag.My gun of choice will be the 7mm mag.Though I've killed my share of whitetail, this will be my first attempt at a Mulie or Elk,as well as my first truely mountain hunt.I spent a few days in the area at the end of August and was pretty amazed by the steep terrain and dark timber as well as all the deadfall. The shooting lanes were smaller than I expected. My thought after looking around was the Courthouse Mnt/Chimney Rock area for Elk (#1 priority) and my second thought was west of Silver Jack and Cowboy Lake up near treeline for deer if I get my Elk.Are the deer scattered throughout the area, or isolated in certain areas. If there are guys familiar with the area, who hunted it before,I'd enjoy your input. Are these good areas, or am I in the wrong spot.

Some other questions I have are, what is a average shooter for this area.I'd be tickled to death with even an average 5pt bull, and to me a heavy 4x4 buck over say 25" would be bigger than any whitetail I've taken. Also, will the bugling be over with by then, with cow calling my best plan of attack.

While out in August I noticed quite a few cattle in the area even above 10000' and was wondering if they'll still be there or if they'll have been moved to lower pasture by then.If they're there, are Elk especially or even deer typically seen near livestock,or should I move on if there are cattle in the area. What snowfall has the area seen to date, and is it still there.I know this is dependent on variables, but in a typical year (if there is such a thing)what can be expected for snow and temperature, and what do you suppose this year will be like?
I will post this on both the Elk and Deer forum so hope it doesnt confuse folks.

Well, that's about enough rambling for someone who types with one finger! LOL

I sent you a PM. I live and hunt in unit 65 and I would be happy to help you as much as I can.
