A Howlin' Good Time (wolf pics)

Went moose hunting this weekend with my dad and my 8 yr old boy. We were positioned just as the fog lifted on a big meadow complex where I always see moose. Not a single swamp donkey was out. I started cow calling and the only answers came from a couple wolves on the other side of the valley. We hunted for several hours and decided to head over see if we could find the wolves. My dad saw one dart across the logging road, so we sat waiting for it to come out. I decided to howl and 3 more darted across the road. Then the whole valley came alive with howling. There had to be well over a dozen wolves in there. My son and I both were howling, with wolves all around us answering us. My dad thought the wolves we saw were juveniles and they sounded young by their howls. There were 2 larger sounding howls below us on the river, so I left my dad and my son howling and moseyed the direction of the larger sounding howls. I worked my way through a patch of timber and came out on an edge of a recent logging block. I started howling and suddenly a wolf appeared in front of me. I got on him just as he went out of sight in the logging debris. He ended up walking only 20 yards from me with no shot opportunity available. I thought he would pick up my scent once he got past me, so I howled and he answered right back. I jumped up on a high stump and saw a good view of him. He was now in the timber moving pretty fast. I let one fly and missed but connected on my second shot. As soon as I saw him go down I howled again and had another one answer me. It wasn't 2 minutes later I heard my dad shoot. My son and my dad had turned around to see what I was doing and my son cried "Wolf". A wolf came out in front of them at about 75 yards. My dad let one rip but had brush in the way so he missed.
It was a cool experience to share with my dad and my son. This is my first wolf. I've had a few "missed" opportunities in the past but have never really had a good shot present itself until now. He looks to be a sub adult of the pack. I'd say he weighed 80-90 pounds. Not a huge dog but not small either.

A couple pics of my son with the wolf.

Now that is awesome ! I wish I lived close to that type of country. Good job !

yea it's pretty awesome to get them howling back at you-I had it happen up in the NWT--didn't bring them in though--but still was a sight to see them and talk to them --congrats--chris

Man, I haven't laid my eyes on anything prettier than a dead wolf pic. Kill some for us too....then that less they can try and trap to bring to the states.

Thanks for all the nice comments. I figured they were the kind of pics that rarely ever get seen on MM. I was kinda expecting someone to call BS and say that it was just a regular ol' dog or something. :) Just never know about this site sometimes. :):)
It was a totally awesome experience to share with my boy. When I started howling, he looked at me and started howling too. It was sooo cool to have those wolves answering back to us. An experience of a lifetime for sure. Not too many kids get to hear a wolf nowadays, let alone talk to them and then see one one the ground up close. I'm sure that my son will remember this for the rest of his life. Pretty cool to think that I am the first one in my family to kill a wolf since my grandfather was a trapper in northern Alberta. Just keepin' up the family tradition I guess.
I'm going to look at the prices on getting a rug mount done. If it is too much for my budget, I may just get it tanned instead. I'll also boil up the skull this week and peroxcide it white and add it to my skull collection.

Awesome pictures and awesome scenery. Awesome hunt. Congratulations. You are correct that your son will remember this hunt for the rest of his life. Great that you could experience this with your dad and son. I may never see a wolf in the wild so your son is way ahead of me and I've been hunting 35+ years. Thanks for sharing.

Congratulations on a fine critter, BC! Glad to see your dad out and about in the woods again, that's terrific! And thanks for those pics, great scenery for sure. Swamp donkeys, LMAO.....

BC,

Great pics and story. And the world is a better place, too. Too bad you could not have busted a couple more of them. And it great to see three generations spending some time out chasing critters together. That will be a story your son will share with someone a long time from now. Thanks for sharing.

Nice photos. Even though you say he wasn't big, he looks big to me. He's almost as tall as you when stretched out.

Got the Skull done this weekend. Here's some pics of it.
