I HAVE A HUNTING PARTNER THAT IS QUITE ACCOMPLISHED IN TAKING ALL SORTS OF TROPHY GAME. HE HAS YET TO HARVEST A REAL GOOD MULEDEER. HE HAS MORE DOLLARS TO SPEND THAN COMMON SENSE MOST ANY DAY OF THE WEEK. HE WILL SPEND 10,000 PLUS FOR A CHANCE AT A STUD BUCK. SHOULD I STEER HIM TO A RESERVATION HUNT, PRIVATE RANCH, ANY ADVICE ????? IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING POSITIVE TO ADD TO HIS CHANCES, FIRE AWAY. THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT IN ADVANCE, TAKE ER EASY... YD.

Send him to Mexico...I would contact huntsonora with this one. He has quite a reputation for killing Big Muleys.

With that much money to spend, your hunting partner is in the drivers seat. Just as he wouldn't shoot the first forked-horn he sees, he shouldn't throw his money to the first outfit who promises him the world. Talk to lots of people. Check them out. Get refrences from successful clients as well as unsuccessful ones. I have no specific ideas who to contact, but I'm sure lots of people here do.

What's his idea of a "stud" buck? That will make a difference. If he plans on "fair chase" surely he understands there are no guarantees. Big mule deer are one of the toughest trophies to collect. Big dollars doesn't necessarily mean big buck!

Just be careful. There are lots of nice web sites out there with big promises.

Good luck and keep us posted.

do like browtine said and contact huntsonora. i have some pics he sent to me of some ridiculously big bucks.

the jicarilla apache res. in new mexico and adventures wild in eastern colorado are known for turning out a lot of big bucks, too.

Unfortunately ten grand does'nt go too far these days, and won't even get him a sniff at a governors permit. Apply for some good permits like all us working stiffs and hope to someday get drawn before he dies. Or go to mexico, Drum would be my choice. There are also some good landowner permits available. Do your research and good luck.

Mexico. That is where I would go. And some day I will. It will just have to be after my kids are out of college.

I would say hook him up with Drum A.K.A. huntsonora for a hunt in Mexico. The 10 gr wil just about cover it all air fair as well.

"We MUST Hunt"

YD, Mexico is probably the best place with the potential of a 200" plus buck for that amount of money. Make sure he works with a good outfitter like Drummond so he does not encounter any problems......... Thanks, Allen Taylor......

I'd check with this guy in old Mexico..

<[email protected]>

..the price for a seven days to hunt mule deer is 7,000.00 plus aprox 350.00 for the lic, gun permit, and fees, you can be book for the next season, with a 50% in advance and the balance 30 days before yor arriving, season begiins early dic 2005- to Late January 2006....

you can pick your 30' buck.......

Just curious here, but a lot of you recommend Drummond as a good outfitter/guide for muley hunting. How many of you have actualy hunted with him? From all the posts, I would assume quite a few. I hunted with him back in 95-96 when he was in Montana. I had a great time and was not disappointed with the knowledge he and the rest of the people there had.I to would recommend him. Anyway, just curious....................rf

huntnphool,
The proof is in the quality of bucks his outfit kills. Being around here for a while and reading his posts, it is fairly easy to tell he 'knows' Monster Mule Deer. I don't need to hunt with him to know I would recommend him to anyone who is wanting to go chase muleys in Ol'Mexico.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-13-04 AT 11:11PM (MST)[p]YukonDall, would your buddy adopt me?.......lol

I can only dream about dropping that kind of money on a hunt, but if I had it, Mexico is where I'd be. I don't personally know Huntsonora, but everything I've ever read says his outfit is one of the best.

These guys are right about a Governor's tag; $10,000.00 wouldn't touch one. In fact, the last one went for $86,000.00 in Utah...yes, $86,000.00!

Buy a ranching for wildlife tag in Colorado. Or put in for a easy draw unit (I am hunting 1 this year...stay tuned) in Colorado and just plain hunt.

GENTLEMEN, I THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR RESPONSES/ ADVICE... KEEP EM COMMIN. I JUST CONTACTED DRUMMOND, AND THAT IS A GREAT PLACE TO START. EELGRASS, THAT IS A GREAT POINT YOU MADE, ALL POSTS WERE GOOD IDEAS..JUST GOTTA DO MORE HOMEWORK. I'LL BET HUNTSONORA IS THE MAN THOUGH. THANKS SO MUCH, TAKE ER EASY..YD.

Jic. Apache Reservation.

Largest Mule Deer in the states. But the tag is around $15,000. They also have a sealed bid hunt that is a 21 day hunt in the rut. About six years ago the tag went for $41,000. Then you have to have a guide. You would see 50+ bucks a day on that hunt.

Here's a couple of other thoughts as well. Obviously Mexico is a good choice, and I agree that Drum is a credible source just based on reading his posts on this board.

But for me, the deserts of Mexico don't have the same appeal as some other areas for mule deer. If I had 10 grand to drop, I'd want the full mule deer experience. Either up high in the rockies or rolling sage and canyon country. I know that there may be a better chance at huge bucks down south of the border, but I've also heard that you can go days without seeing a deer. Of course, that's not to say that big bucks are an easy experience anywhere . Anyway, I'd consider the high country of Western Wyoming, the breaks country of Alberta, put in for some of the impossible tags in Eastern Nevada, the Strip, and start building points in Colorado.

Just another way to look at it,

WH
