According the the article in the Salt Lake Tribune http://www.sltrib.com/outdoors/ci_2427160 most hunters are illegal because:

"170 grain or greater - requirement for bullets used in rifles during deer hunt"

Now I don't know about you, but my 160 grain bullets from my 7 Mag do a great job on deer. I looked in the proclimation and it only requires the bullet be center fire. Looks like I need to load the 175's for this years hunt.

Like I've always said, 165 grain 7MM just is not enough for a 200 pound deer. You must have an exit wound of at least 8 inches around instead of 4.

That was a mis-print, you need a 170 grain bullet for your muzzleloader to hunt deer, but any centerfire rifle is allowed for the rifle season.

The author of the article is wrong! Read the proc. The 170 grain requirement is only for Muzzleloaders for deer and antelope, not rifles. For rifles, the proc says must be centerfire cartridges and expanding bullets.

IF YOUR GOING TO BE A BEAR BE A GRIZZLY BEAR!
Have taken all my big bucks with 139 grain out of my seven mag.
Who says you have to have 170 grain or better.Have only lost 2 bucks in over 25 years, and that was because I did'nt make a good shot.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-17-04 AT 06:17AM (MST)[p]Dutch, You are kidding right?. You don't want any exit wound!!!. A bullet that stops just before exiting the animal is perfect! Perfect bullet expansion and retained energy is when a bullet enters behind the shoulder on one side and stops just before exiting the other side. This causes the animal to absorb 100% of the bullets enargy. While skinning by buddies deer this year we found his bullet (180 gr nosler partition) just under the skin on the opposite side of entry in one piece. That bullet performed perfectly. JMO!.

Remember bigger is better.I Shoot 200grs out my 338 and 405s out of my 45-70. CAN'T BE TOO DEAD-FARTHER THEY RUN THE LONGER IT ON MY BACK!
