LAST EDITED ON Nov-28-07 AT 10:06PM (MST)[p]I may be jumping the gun here a little since applications cannot be submitted til January, but, I am just curious...If you were a Utah resident with 11 points what unit would you apply for? I am looking at either Muzzleload or Any Weapon hunts. No archery. No late season. My expectations are to have a great opportunity at harvesting at least a 350 class bull with opportunity for bigger. Although I would like a DIY, I am not against paying $500-1,000.00 for a little help/finders fee either. Now hold on..quit laughing, I'm sure there are several people out there who would be willing to share their knowledge of an area for this small amount of money. I am not going to pay thousands of dollars. My pockets arent deep enough for that and I am too cheap!
I have a good idea where I intend to put in already, I just would like to hear what some of you would do. Would you hold out for a rifle tag? Or, take the plunge on a Muzzleloader tag?And please spare me the suggestions for Diamond Mtn. and the likes. Thanks for the help in advance

11 points + Panguitch Lake Late = 411 3/4 Gross Thats All I Have To Say!

I would go to huntodds.com that will tell you all you need to know
I drew this year with 11 points and shot a 373 bull

Consider Redd Ranches CWMU. He'll provide you with a guide and put you in right along with all (usually less then 5 per camp) of his paying customers for less then 1000 dollars. You pretty much just have to cover his costs, but by the time you tip your guide the price will be around 1000. You can bring a friend for just the cost of food (right around $100 per day.)

Getting a bull more then 350 with a chance at better is amazingly high. The biggest bull they've killed is around the 390 mark. It's a 5 day hunt, and trust me, that's plenty of time.

Just a suggestion.

P.M. me if you have any more questions.

Good luck,

Todd

I was going to suggest Diamond mtn, but I guess you dont want to go there,;-). Theyve killed some big bulls up there the last couple years.

check out Goochs results for proof.

bingo,

Don't be fooled, 350 bulls do not grow on trees. They are there and if you draw, scout, and hunt hard you can kill a 350 bull without paying any finder fees. You may even do better because the big bulls exist. They are not every where though and getting one can be difficult. However, your chances are good to meet your goal. One of the hardest things, for me anyway when trophy hunting, is judging animals on the hoof and still having time to shoot. I would do everything I could to educate myself scoring on the hoof. It would suck to have 350 as a minimum goal only to misjudge and fall short.

Just a thought. I would be much happier with a 350 bull I did all by myself than paying 1000 for someone to show me a 400" bull. I take pride in doing it DIY. To each their own though.

11 points? You are getting close! Good luck.

Listen to KTC, that is great advice.
I looked over numerous elk during the last LE Utah hunt. I had a very very hard time telling what was 350, 380, etc
Spend time figuring that out.
DIY is so rewarding! Start 3-4 days before your hunt, and you will figure out where they are.
Good luck!

bowhunt,

Glad to see you are feeling better! Your big old stinky DIY bull would send most people into cardiac arrest!;-)

great advice everyone. Thank you. There really is some powerful info you can draw from on this forum

I would suggest picking a unit reasonably accessible for you...one that you can spend plenty of time scouting in and getting to know well, without having to spend a small fortune on gas, etc. each time you want to go look for animals.

Best of luck to you in the draws and Im sure wherever you draw, Im sure you will find plenty of guys on here willing to share their knowledge and insight, without payment. If you draw any of the units I know, I'd me more than happy to share what I can.
