Having been shutout once again for deer in AZ. I picked up an OTC tag in unit 16 to do any type of hunting! I am just wondering what I have gotten myself into. Are these OTC tags over subscribed? What are my chances of seeing some deer versus hunters? Any issues with private land and access issues? My hunt is Nov 10-15 any chance of the rut getting underway with some colder weather? I know the area is largely cedar country, any areas you can glass from or are you just busting deer out of the thick stuff all day? Any info would benefit. WHo knows chances are many of you out there had the same idea, we'll see. Thanks

I'll see if I can help you a little, I hunt the southeast side of NM. It does seem like they over sale the OTC lic, I go with a group of guys and have been for about 10 years now. It use to be everybody would get a buck, now a days about 25% of us do. Part of it might be that some of us hunt harder then the others though. I have manage to get a buck every year, the best being a 6x6 and the worst was a 2x2 last year. There will be a lot of hunters out there, the majority of them don't show up untill Friday evening though. The weather will be in the low 60 to high 50 in the day time and low 30 to high 20 at night. The best advice I can give you is get a good BLM map, the best ones I have found so far are at www.publiclands.org they run about 7 dollars. I also recommend wearing some blaze orange starting on Friday. They get a lot of hunters that this is there first hunt and buck fever sets in. Good luck and hope this helps you.

RE: New Mexico unit 12

Muzzy, now that I look at a game unit map I am actually hunting in unit 12 north of Quemado and back to the AZ stateline. It's hard to get info. on a unit when you dont even know where you are going yourself, sorry.
