is there any good deer in this unit i may be going up there in mid nov on a private ranch ot do some hunting

Yes, lots of deer, hold out for a nice one. A 160-170 is possible but rare. 150-160 is more realistic as a good buck. What is the name of the ranch?

The area is better than most places. I hunted that unit for over ten years and took some decents bucks. We hunted the Ranney Ranch, Bird Ranch, Adams Ranch, and the Surratt Ranch ( no longer the Surratt). If you can, inquire about the Owens Ranch, which borders the Ranney and the Adams Ranch. There are two Adams ranches, and the one that borders the the Owens and Ranney is strickly a game preserve. There are big bucks on the game perserve that will come over to the Owens and Ranneys to breed the does. I have seen huge, huge bucks on video that were on the Surratt's but I do not think that they are hunting that ranch at this moment. The first picture is a buck I took off of one of the Adams ranches. The second is a buck I took of the Ranneys. I have seen bigger bucks than that, but it is extremely rare. The bucks you see in the pictures are far better than the average bucks there. Hope this helps.

I think the question was about unit 37 Overkill. All of the ranches that you are talking about are in 38. I work for the outfitter doing some guiding and yes there are lots of deer. Unit 37 has less numbers but still has some good deer, especially on private ground.

I must be losing my memory, sorry about that!

I know what you mean. I have an ailment known as CRS (Can't remember sh*t) that has effected me for a long time. And I don't think I'm on the road to recovery either.

I just got back from my 6th year in a row in Unit 37. (Muzzleloader) I was hunting in the Tuscon Mts. west of Capitan, and once again came up empty. Lots of hunters. Saw almost 30 deer a day, but all small bucks and I passed on them once again. I watched one in my scope at about 20 yards that was a forky, but illegal under the new rules. I just let him go, and then this guy in a green chevy drove up and blasted him. I remarked that the deer he just shot was illegal, and he said mind my own business! No wonder there's not many good deer in the public land of this unit. With the upcoming draw next year, I'm probably left out. Any information on any of these private ranches and the cost would be greatly appreciated. Please e-mail me at [email protected] (P.S - I found a nice but dead 4x4- probably mountain lion related - post is in the general hunting forum)

I hope you discreetly took down that guys license plate number and aynonomously called the Poachers hotline.

I didn't have anything to write with or anything. I was hoping to see the Fish and Game Officer who had been up there checking on everybody, and I was going to tell him to make sure he checked their camp. However, he didn't show up that day, and when we left the mountain about 3 hours later, the guy and his buddies had already left camp. In addition, I'm pretty sure you can't roadhunt on public land in N.M., and not only did this guy shoot from his truck, for two days he and his buddies had been driving on all the forest roads and hunting from the back of their truck. (New Mexico Plates)

The bad thing about this poaching is it seems to happen constantly. Last year I turned in 6 different plates for shooting does. The game warden informed me that a lot of these hunters just blast away at a deer then go see what it is, if it is a illegal deer they ussually just leave it laying. Then on top of this it seems like any time I get a plate it is a NM plate. Does New Mexico have any type of hunters education our do they allow you to be ignorant about hunting? I think this is going to be my last year of deer hunting in NM. I think I'm going to try Co next year.

Notice - I just said New Mexico plates on the truck - I also met several N.M. hunters who were awesome and helpful! It's the individuals that are guilty, not the state!! I love hunting in N.M. but with next years draw only (with out of state unguided getting about a 10 percent chance) I'm probably out of the mix!

looks like you did not read the post on here did you, because most of the trouble makers have nm PLATES. do that ##### in texas and you go to jail in nm you just pay a ticket and not that big of one looks like. may be you sould look at the facts before you call all of us from texas trouble maker. I'm a outfitter down in texas and most of the people we have trouble with are the uneducated hunters from any state! i had a group of hog hunters come down and had to buy there rifles when they got here. they had them bore sighted and looked at me like i was crazy when i said they had to shoot there guns at the range before they could go in the field to hunt. most did not even know how to us the guns they had just bought mini14,ak47,ar15. what a joke. so not all texas hunter are jack asses but you do have some, just like you have in ever state. i shoot a 29" 5x4 last year in nm 4.5 miles from the truck it took me all day to get all of the meat out but i got it all and i don't like mule deer that much. most would have cut the head off and left the meat. so give some of texas hunters a break

LAST EDITED ON Oct-28-04 AT 03:09PM (MST)[p]I never called texas hunters "trouble maker" or "jacks asses". I was simply trying to state to "TxMuley" (is there such a thing?) not to be such a hipocrite. Here he states that he has been hunting NM for the past 6 years yet he's blaming the poaching on New Mexicans.
These poachers are probably "uneducated" ex-Texans who moved to NM for some REAL hunting, then mistakenly shoot does thinking they are big ol' "hogs".
Stay in Texas and shoot your high fence hogs and white tail.

NMHntr I owe you and probably the majority of hunters NM an apology. The poacher are more likely a minority of the hunters, but the game warden did agree with me that it is a major problem across the state. The hunters just seem to be out there to party and blast away at thing that moves. Granted all states have the bad apples, but it seems that NM has a bigger problem then the rest. When I talk to other people that hunt NM they have had stories of the same thing happening. So yes I do get mad about the poaching and probably used the wrong verbage in my statement, so I will apologize to all the NM hunters that do hunt with in the laws.
Also there are mule deer in west Tx, but Tx unlike NM does not really have any BLM land to hunt. IF you want to hunt here for a mule deer it will run you about $5000.00 a gun for a lease. One of the biggest non-typicals last year was killed outside of town by the name of Toyah in west Tx.

I have 2 great private ranches to recommend in 37. One is on the north side of the Capitans. The other is on the SE corner of the mountain. The SE ranch charges a trespass at $1,250/gun and provides a place to stay. Lots of deer. They patrol to keep the bad guys from trespassing. Jim

i just think it does not look to good when you call all texas hunters (INGNORANT) are when some one calls NM hunters ingnorant . Both of you should have said something like, hunters that break the law are ingnorant. just because some one come from texas are any other state does not make them ingnorant hunters. that makes them the hunterts that keep our great sport going by spending lots of money just like you and i. if they break the law then by all means they are very ingnorant and hurting our sport. i love to go out of state to see the beauty of other places and get away. if you have not left NM to do some out of state hunting then you have no idea what you are missing. why don't you come down here to texas and let me take you on a FREE ol'hog hunt. then if you don't have any fun you can say texas sucks and i won't say a thing. but don't knock till you try it. as for as high fences i do not like them at all. the way i see it is if you are going to have exotic game in a high fence then you should have to remove all of the whitetail from the ranch. but thats the big money game down here.

I just today booked a hunt on a high fenced ranch in Tx and cant wait to check it out. 5000 acres will report when I get back in early Dec. And I am from N.M. NM huntr is an idiot and needs to be called out as an ignorant beotch!
Shut your piehole .

Hey Whopperstopper,

If I make a blanket statement about how stupid hunting in Texas is will you take me on a hog hunt? Just let me know, and I can come up with some terrible things about our state ;-)

Let me tell you guys something. I grew up in Texas and have lived in New Mexico for the last 12 years. There IS a problem with poaching here in New Mexico. And its a year round thing. I would guess that a very small percentage of the game law infractions are comitted by people from out of state. It seems to be a way of life for folks who live in all the little mountain villages. I'm not saying that makes it right. The major difference that I've noticed in the two states ( New Mexico and Texas) is law enforcement. It seems that there is a game warden behind every other tree in Texas. I might have been checked by once or twice, in twelve years, in New Mexico. Maybe its a funding thing or maybe its just that there is so much public land in New Mexico to patrol. One thing is for sure, if we had less poaching, we would have more deer.

Damn, straight there are. Thats where I am headed in January. Found some really nice sheds, in the spring and some nice scraps this fall, still have yet to locate a big buck though, found some smaller ones but nothing huge.
