First Muley

Killed my first muley during the last rifle hunt here in Colorado. I backpacked a camp in with my uncle to about 10,400 ft. I shot this buck on the evening of opening day. Caught him entering a meadow with another buck and doe and dropped him in his tracks. I am quite proud of him. My uncle killed a nice 4x4 the next morning as well.

Great Deer Man! Congrats.

Michael~All Gods creatures welcome... right next to the mashed potatoes and gravy.

He was a hoss. I have hunted whitetails my whole life and this deer looked like he could use a saddle. This is the only deer I have ever killed that grew as I got closer to him. His horns didn't look all that big when I shot because his body was so large! The deer have been eating good lately due to all of the rain. This buck had an honest 3 inches of fat on him in places.

Don't you just love the pictures that make the bucks look bigger than they really are?

LAST EDITED ON Oct-29-04 AT 09:15AM (MST)[p]Tell me, are you a full time jerk or are you just having a bad day?

Thank you.

I did work pretty hard for him and I am proud of him no matter what he might score.

First Muley? D-I-Y?

AWESOME!

Good job, you should be proud. Its not all about score, don't let anyone try and fool you.

BTW, I think its a great picture!

I GUESS YOU COULD CALL ME A FULL TIME JERK--IT'S JUST THAT IT ANNOYS ME WHEN PEOPLE TRY TO MAKE THEIR BUCKS LOOK BIGGER THAN THEY REALLY ARE. THIS SECOND PHOTO GIVES YOUR BUCK JUSTICE. NICE PHOTO.

Countingcoo, Just ignore the ass. Great buck, anyone who hunts can tell that's a very large bodied deer.. Congrats.

10,000 feet! Do you know what that country would look like here in B.C? Can't imagine hunting that high with aspen around. Nothing but tundra around these parts at 10,000 ft. Congrats on deer.

Coo,
You mentioned about 3 inches of fat in some places...is the meat a little pinkish and/or does it have good marblization of fat? In other words, is there fat in the flesh like a slab of marble has the colors running through it?

If so...you have some mighty fine eatin' there my friend!

Send backstraps to AZ!

come on guys, you know what I'm talking about. You've seen pictures where the guy tries to make his buck look larger than it really is. I'm not ripping on his first buck. I just found it as an opportunity to give my opinion. His other picture clearly shows that it is a nice deer (antler wise). I wasn't making any comment on the body size. It is a large bodied deer. If you want to call me an ass then go ahead.

Congratulations on your first Muley....Hopefully the start of many more in the years to come.
Thanks for sharing.
Best,
Jerry

Awesome deer. Looks like some area I was hunting...but I didn't take anything. What unit was it in?

I would be happy to send you some backstraps but they didn't last long and they were pretty tasty. I have heard that mule deer can be pretty gamey but this one is pretty mild.

Thats awesome Coo. He reminds me of my first one but mine wasn't that tall. Congrats on a nice buck.

Coo, nice buck...I also took my 1st CO Muley (and I'm a resident$@!?!) during the 1st combined season and like you mentioned he was FAT!!! 2.5-3.0 inches of fat along his backstraps and hind quarters...I've taken a couple of nicer racked mulies in WY, but had never quite seen an animal as porked up as this one...it may be because they haven't entered the rut yet, but either way, he was a bruiser...when I first saw your pics I thought we may have shot a couple of brothers...mine isn't very wide, but he has great height...hope to post some pics soon...it may take a bit since I'm new to MM...I love this site

Congrats! I would love to see your pics. I am a resident too but have only been here about 2 years. If you need a place to post your pictures e-mail them too me and I can put them up on my web server.

Coo thats a great deer and I'm no Ansel Adams but I thought BOTH pictures were great. Ignore the professional photographer it would seem to me someone may be a little jealous.

Off to WY today for the late season and hopefully a good critter...I'll get back to you when I return and we'll see if we can get some pics uploaded...thanks for the help...

p.s. had some loins last night and that deer definitely wasn't feeding on sagebrush...like butter baby

By the way, you had mentioned earlier hunting whitetails your whole life...I'm originally from WI so the same goes for me...been in CO for 4 yrs. now...

Good luck! I am trying to figure out a way to get a late season cow tag for Colorado right now so I can put some more meat in the freezer.
