Sorry for the title but I couldn't help it. Here's a pic of an old warrior. Looks like he's on the downhill slide. Interesting scars.

Great picture but I think that bull has seen better days. That ol' winter coat, grey muzzle, and odd-shaped head definitely gives it a different look.

I'm going by the crappy horn growth, head-shape, hide condition, sway back and the infamous pot-gut. Most young bulls won't engage in a fight enough to have scars that bad. I'm no biologist....maybe it's not even an elk.

Great pix, i agree!

But as for him "regressing"...i think not.

He does look like he's got a little age on him, but with extremely short front and no mass, i'd say that's not an old bull by any means.

Post rut and midway through a rough winter would make even a spike look poor.

We have aged bulls on the Deseret ranch that were well over 10 years old (one even 13) and they were still big in the antler department even though their bodies were worn.

I'd say that picture is of a bull about 5 years old that is just flat worn out and looking raggy.

But then again....maybe it's NOT even an elk????:p

I am with you on this one Zigga it defiantly looks older than 5 years to me. I don't think it is regressing either I just think it never had the 400 inch genes in it.
Great pictures!

Archery is a year round sport!!

He looks like a knarley bull to me. I have always thought that pedicel circumference is a fair indication of age? I have a feeling that genetics and nutrition may have impacts on pedicel circumference, but would think older bulls would also have larger circumference pedicels? If this is the case I wouldn't say the bull in the photos has that large of pedicels?

Seems like this elk is pretty popular. I've seen him in another forum, and I've also taken pictures of him. He does look pretty beat up.

RE: YOU UN-EDUCATED DIPSTICKS!!!

Looks like a 4-5 year old bull that over did it during the rut and wore himself down. His head is fairly small (in width), he has little mass, which leads me to guess he is a 'younger' bull.

Define, develop, and sustain BOTH trophy and opportunity hunts throughout the state of Utah.

I've seen bulls aged 10+ years by local biologists that had short fronts and light beams. I've also seen a 13 year old bull with huge mass and no length. I shot a 9 year old bull with a 36 inch spread and light beams. I know younger bulls have longer pedicles but is that a definitive way to tell? I'd say none of us know until we go kill this bull. Who's in?

I'd have to agree slam. One of the things that solidifys it in my oppinion is that his pedistals are small. Small fronts could be from a variety of things such as, vegitation, genetics and of coarse as you mentioned, age. The pedistals are almost always larger the older a bull gets. My cousin killed a 6x2 that would have gone 360 if he would have been typical on both sides. He was a fourteen year old bull. Had a busted pedistal on his right side cousing the antler to grow non typically. But the pedistals were huge. Compare the pedistals in the picture to his eye balls. There small. He's a young bull.

This bull lives in Yellowstone. That's why he is still alive. Thanks to the wolves I think there is only one more. :)
