Do you shoot him?

In order to pass time I thought it might be fun to post a photo of a bull and see who would and wouldn't take the bull.

Exactly - what tag do I have? LE? If so what unit? Governor's or raffle tag? More details.

If it is general open season there isn't a person in here who won't say yes. Give us some more conditions.

That is for you to decide. If you want to put circumstances on your decision that is up to you. For fun I will give a history of the bull after a few have posted.

Based on the ONE picture, my answer is NO! Good bull though. Tell the story already!

PRO

Define, develop, and sustain BOTH trophy and opportunity hunts throughout the state of Utah.

This is your chance. The picture was taken from approx. 300 yds, with a 10 power lens so there you go you are looking through your binocs now is your chance to decide do you fill the tag or not. I see the equation as that simple, I guess it is kind of a put your money where your mouth is situation. Is he good enough or not?
Some may say he is with a bow others under any circumstances and others only in a general unit. You can explain yourself if you feel a need.
So far one has shot and another has not after judging the bull in there binocs.

After a look through the bino's I would lay the pack down and slide the .300 winchester ultra long bow up and settle the pin (chross hairs) behind the shoulder and let him have it, just from a quick glance that bull will net 350 plus! Definately a shooter bull in my opinion.

mule,

I am shooting right after he moves his head and I get a confirmation his G1's and G2's are there.

I would shoot him, because I will never have a gov tag or such. Bash the bull if you want but I will proudly display the bull on my wall.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-15-08 AT 09:37PM (MST)[p]I wish I had the choice, my answer would be a definite YES. That bull has great mass and good looking 3rds. I screwed up the one and only bull tag I have ever drawn, and I hope someday I get the chance to redeem myself with a bull like that.

hmmm....... kinda depends where im hunting. once in a life time tag opening day of season....... no he's got weak 5th and 6ths i think i can definetly do better. Back home in Colorado....... we got us an elk to skin

I would have to pass... great lookin bull, but when and if i get my elk tag, i want a bull that is a little bit bigger but definately a great bull, Great Pics thanks for the off-season fun.

Alright here is the rest of the story. This picture was taken on a Utah limited entry unit 2 days before the any weapon opened in 2006. My wife and daughter had tags that year, we spent all season trying to get my wife on this bull, after trying valiantly her tag was unfilled. However, this bull was taken opening day of muzzleloader within a few hundred yards of where we ate lunch the day before or last day of the any weapon season. Anyway on the ground the bull grossed right at 380. A sfor those who would pass kudo's to you, but it makes me really wonder what are you thinking?
FYI the unit is considered one of the poorest LE units in Utah.

Depends on a few things. If during scouting there were bigger bulls spotted, then no I wouldn't shoot yet. If it was the biggest bull I'd seen during scouting then BOOMSHOCKALOCKA! Whats the big deal about keeping the name of the unit all to yourself. Do you think that pic of a bull, that has passed on, will have more people snoopin around your unit? I don't.

I don't believe the unit is important. I am of the opinion that if it is not something you would shoot the first day anywhere anytime and anyplace then it isn't something you should shoot the last day on the poorest unit.
I simply added the comment about the unit to get people thinking that if our poor units are growing bulls like this then why are we so restrictive with most of our units. I hope to post a number of bulls to look at off this unit before we quit.

Travis,

Congrats to your wife for being determined to get one specific bull she wanted. I like hearing stories like this to kill any myths that rifle hunters just want to kill. For many of us, it is more than that.

Can I ask what your daughter got? Sounds like she ended up with a bull? Nice 6X6?

My daughter was 14 and decided she would shoot any branch antlered bull. The second day she shot a 6X6. I was extremely proud of her. We had spotted the herd, after our stalk we were within 280 yds. A calf started calling above us, soon a cow was coming our way. I figured this would be the chance to upset the herd and get the bull a little closer. After 20 minutes of watching and calling she finally shot him at 90 yds.

A pretty happy kid.

Great bull! She should be very proud. I would say she made very good on her tag and got a great bull! Tell her great job.

Travis,

Seems like I have seen that Bull of your daughters before!. Congrats again to her! Great pictures!

Oh and BTW, I would have also "settled" for that 380 Bull that you posted earlier. Even if the "Brag Mags" wouldn't have wanted the story because it was not killed on a high profile unit.

Good luck with the draws!

Those pictures say it all. Being in the mountains with the ones you love and chasing great animals too. Congats to you and your daughter. I hope someday to have a pic like that with my sons. Thanks for sharing.

Very nice bull. Congrats. What's that chunk of elk hide in the foreground? Did she blow the gunnels off the thing????

MP,

Those are some of the best pictures I have seen in awhile. It sure is nice to set aside the debates about units and weapons and see the fruits of what we all work so hard for. I hate to admit it, but do you know how long this old guy worked for a bull like that? It took me many years!

My daughter got her first animal this past fall. A very good buck antelope. I was pretty excited to see how much she enjoyed hunting. Hopefully with 0 points she can draw and get her on a bull even close to the quality of your daughter's!;-) In a way, I would rather she waits a bit and we can shoot some cows in the meantime.

Again, tell her congrats on a big, good looking bull.

Great pic's with the family Travis. Congrats to your daughter! It is sure good to see all the wives, and kids pic's! I like them the best! Good family hunts with any weapon are my favorite!

I would have put a stalk on that bull if shot was presented I would have taken it even if it scored a lot less. In fact I would have shot your daughters bull.

Love the pictures can't wait till my girls are old enough to hunt.

Archery is a year round commitment!!

LAST EDITED ON Jan-17-08 AT 09:05AM (MST)[p]The trophy picture is the morning after when we went to pack the bull out. The hide on the ground is the belly hair. I once had a friend who saved that to use as cover scent while bowhunting, that is another story.
My daughter and I were alone when we shot him. However, I am a lucky man. As much as I love the outdoors I have been blessed with a wife and 3 daughters who not only supported me in my edeavors but have participated. I know sharing times like this is worth more than a 400"er and a posse.

ktc,
I am not one for posting pictures of hunts, however you are exactly right these threads and pictures are here because I felt that MM was becoming to much of a negative debate forum. It is sad when we start tearing apart a man in his later years for doing something he loves because we believe we could have done better. ie "govenors tag". Therefore this is an effort to refocus MM into fun, constructive discussion and hunting heritage. ktc also posted a few photos that were worth a thousand words and more than a B&C score with his daughters antelope pictures and the last 2 years of family elk pictures.

I am guilty as anybody as getting caught up in the politics and banter of MM, many times sticking my foot in my mouth. Maybe this is an effort to be a little more friendly.

For the record this is the only bull in my house mounted, maybe the experience is worth more than the size. Thanks to Roscoe? Autumn pride for doing a fantastic job on the mount.

Mulepacker,
Thanks for the extra info and great pics! Congrats on the bull your daughter took in the pics!!
I would not have guessed that the bull in post #1 was that big in inches (I'm not very good at estimating scores, I don't have enough elk experience), I posted earlier that I would have shot him, I still would. Thanks again. :)

Not sure where the question lies.........My arrow has already started unzipping hide:)
