LAST EDITED ON Nov-04-04 AT 08:40AM (MST)[p]My buddy and I drew for a high country hunt that started early in September. We scouted it out a few times before the season and only saw one buck. We believe the buck would have gone close to the B&C minimum. He was only 26 wide but perfectly symetrical, very tall, and very deep forks. He was hanging around 13,000 feet, at the tree line, and 7 miles in from the road. We were excited but worried about only seeing one buck.

On a later trip we saw a few other bucks in another canyon. One of them would go close to 30 and heavy but he had small forks. This buck was above 13,000 feet and in the rocks on a nasty ridge.

On our way back I got a ticket for speeding. The officer wrote down the wrong speed on the ticket. When I brought it to her attention she threatened to take both of us to jail. She wrote the ticket for 45 over the limit. It was a criminal charge and I had to get an attorney. I had to save my vacation time at work for court in Colorado. I had to miss the hunt I had waited 4 years to draw.

My buddy went to Colorado by himself. He hunted hard opening weekend and had an opportunity on a tall 26" 3x4. He went back and had an opportunity on a 4x4 buck he said would go at least 24" tall and 24 wide. He said it curled in a little on the tops. He passed because he wanted to get that bigger 30" buck we had scouted.

He never found that bigger buck and he didn't shoot when he should have at the taller buck. He came home empty handed. I got my speeding violation dropped to a minor speeding ticket. I paid $300 for the tag, $80 for the ticket, and $2000 to the attorney. Maybe I can draw again in 3 years.

Did anyone else have some luck on their early season tags in Colorado?

Good Heavens!! I am sorry for the stroke of bad luck. Murphy sure comes down on us sometimes. It just wasn't mean't to be this season. Just remember, there is always a reason behind everything (good and bad). Next time you draw, those bucks that were near B&C will be well into the B&C class. Take Care.

Ouch! Sorry to hear things didn't work out for you man. On the bright side though. When they finally do work out and you connect on that big old buck it's going to seem just that much sweeter!

Keep after it. Your day is coming.

Man, I'm sorry you had a lousy experience. I'm going to quit moping about using all my points & only getting an average buck...

I am curious, when you realized that you weren't going to be able to go, was it before the hunt started? If so, did you try to turn your tag in? I believe you can do that and if you eat the cost of the tag, you will retain your points.

NOT BEING SMART,BUT WAS YOU DRIVING GJM'S TRUCK???

45 MPH OVER 75 = 120,AND THEM BAD ASS HI-PO'S IN COLORADO DON'T HAVE ANY FEELERS FOR A GUY THAT HAS SPENT SEVERAL YEARS TO DRAW THE TAG!!!

THAT WOULD BE ABOUT MY LUCK,IF I EVER DRAW!!!

THE ONLY bobcat WONDERING??? DID YOU SAY SUM BEACH???

After all that and 2000 bucks in legal fees, I'd really be tempted to see if I could recover my costs for the lost hunt. Oh, that can't happen. Doesn't matter if a cop screwed it all up. The rogue bad ones are in the minority, but they don't care what of your life they screw up and how much it cost you in the end. Those few that are above the law suck.

Was that tag for unit 74 near Silverton? I video
bucks in that area? Roy in Montrose

What a bummer! I guess there is a lot to be said for a guided, land owner tag hunt. You don't have to spend all summer scouting. You don't have to wait years trying to draw a tag. A nice relaxing drive both ways. And in this case, about the same price.
Don't get me wrong, I've spent most of my life going through all of the stuff I've mentioned. I just think that if it's affordable, some of the guided hunts are really nice.

Sorry to hear of your bad times this year. I know how much you must be disappointed.

Steve
