HERE IS TODAY'S CHANCE TO SHOOT. THIS PHOTO WAS TAKEN 1-16-08, SO THERE IS NOT A RESTY OF THE STORY YET. ONE FOR THE BOWHUNTERS ABOUT 30 YDS. DO YOU SHOOT?

No, I would let him grow up for 4-5 more years first.

Is that at Hardware?

LAST EDITED ON Jan-18-08 AT 12:31PM (MST)[p]No it is not Hardware. Here is a photo of last year so you can see how he has matured. Pro is right he won't reach potential for a couple years. The extra tine is actually seperate fron the main beam, second shot should show it better.

That would be very hard for me to pass up with a bow, not necessarily the size, it's the extra point that gets me :)

Just for sake that I need some practice judging bulls, would you say this is a 330-340 class bull?

His left foot is up like he is continuing to walk to the right which will offer a better angle at the lungs, I wait till he takes a few more steps then stops and I release my arrow.
Can't see if his left antler is broken, but if I'm on a self guided hunt in a general area I'd take him.

With a bow, general season, NO HESITATION........ If I were lucky enough to be on an LE hunt, then I wuold have to think about it. Like that would ever happen!

Ditto to what HH says. If it is on an LE area, maybe if time is running out or if I have fallen in love with him.

To me, it isn't about the size of the trophy but the quality of the trophy. Trophy is in the eye of the beholder. This is a truly unique bull and would be a great harvest in most areas. I do see where he can still do a little maturing but you are never guaranteed that. There are a lot of factors that go into antler growth from year to year.

If you are after pure score results then yes you wait. If you are after a bull with a lot of character and the situation is right and you like him, then go ahead and do it and don't regret it.

I have a Brother in law that drew a Panguitch Lake Archery Bull tag a few years back. He spent from April to August scouting and following one particular bull. He knew him inside and out. Two nights before the season started he called him in to within 100 yards and then backed off some to not make him wary. Opening morning he was set up perfectly, he bugled and bull came on the run. He was 40 yards, perfect shooting lane, he drew, but he couldn't release. He couldn't bring himself to do it as he felt he was too close to the bull. So he passed. Another hunter killed the bull a few days later and it measured somewhere around 370. My brother in law never regretted one bit of it, to him it was his most successful hunt. He didn't need to kill the bull to enjoy the hunt. Granted he has no trophy, but he has the memory.

I would shoot him. Pretty nice bull and I love the freaky extra tine! By the way, there are very few bulls I would not shoot!!!! Keep em coming man! I love the pic's!

He's dand sure got enough "potential" right now. I'm drawing back and gonna let the air out once he stops! Great pic , thanks for sharing it.

JB48, I come up with off the first pic-
36" spread (guesstimation)
44" beams
8,7,5,5, mass x2
17" G1's
15" G2's
8" G3's
16" G4's
9" G5's

304 gross + 10" extra eye guard= 314" gross, 295 Net, pisscutter :)

Any place I have ever had a bull tag, (WA. ID. MT. WY. OR.) he is getting shot or shot at, bow, rifle, muzz, spear, whatever.
I have never had the pleasure of a LE UTAH tag so don't know how that would effect situation judgement. :D
This is fun, are you going to keep these posts coming?
Mulepacker, Thanks.

MulePacker,

Sorry no bow hunter here, but I will put myself in those shoes for a minute. I am glad you posted this, I had to get mad again today already! :)

Since I am a bow greenhorn, I am shooting. Not a bad bull at all especially with the extra thing going on. With a rifle I am passing. However, I find it interesting how some people like the nontypical and odd growth stuff. I am thinking he scores higher than the earlier guess? Maybe 320-330? This is the first picture of course.

I didn't mean that is was only for the bowhunters. How would it be to thump one at 30 yds with a .338? And I surely did not want to upset anyones friday afternoon, that would be wrong! I do plan on keeping them coming as long as it is in fun.
With a little luck I will get you a couple other views of this bull.

MP,
No, I got mad on another thread, not this one! How can anyone get mad on a good thread like this? The reason we all start coming to MM? I liked the bow scenerio. With the debates over bow and rifle, I thought I could put myself in bow shoes for a minute and see what I thought compared to other stick flippers. I still say, with a bow, calling him in, I am definitely shooting.

I would take the shot. I would agree that he is a low 300". 310+/-. I took a 340 bull a couple of years ago (when I could shot straight)and he is much larger than the pictured bull.

Like I've always said I don't need a tape to tell me how happy I should be. He gets an arrow as soon as he is done walking.

I'll guarantee that bull is bigger than ya all think

JB48,
I am NO expert on judging racks, that is just my guess from the picture, wileywapati might be right along with you, he could be 30" bigger, that's the best part about this :)

I know the guy that has this set of sheds from last year....in fact I had them in my hand this morning...he's a neat bull....scored in the 320's

once again, it depends on the unit, and how many days are left. But it isnt a "oh yea, he is dead" kind of bull. next year probably though as i bet he puts on 20 inches or better
