Well, my muzzleloader hunt left me empty (not that I didn't have my chances and just blew it.) However, the 2nd day of the hunt, my friend Brian Kuester and I were sitting on top of some ridges, frrrreeezing our asses off because we left our coats in camp that morning. It was about 3pm and we were glassing a decent little 4 point that was about 22" or so. We decided to see if we could get closer and if the chance arose, I would attempt a shot. When we dropped over the backside to get out of sight, Brian noticed some deer down in the bottom of a canyon way below us. I stopped to look and he was about to move on, saying, nothing but does. So I glanced down, about 400 yards below us, I spotted 2 more deer underneath a tree bedded. So I glassed down, and I was like, there's a buck. He was like... BS. So I sat down and started to glass... between us shivering, the deer not twitching and the wind blowing, we couldn't really put antlers on either of them. I knew I had seen antlers, but he finally convinced me it was a doe. So I was like, if it is, I'm gonna throw some rocks, get it to at least move. He said, go ahead. After rolling several large rocks down the hill unable to get their attention, I started yelling. It finally turned enough we could see it had antlers, but that was about it. He asked me if I wanted to go down in after them. At this point, and as usual for me... I decided it was too far to chase, not knowing what it was. So he decided he would go... we devised a plan to sneak down the back of the ridge they were on and then pop over. He left and I watched him drop over... about 5 minutes later, 3 does ran over the top and right by the bedded deer. They finally stood up in no great hurry and this was my 1st glance at him. He had good tines, nice mass and was pretty wide. Without hesitation, I got up and tried to make my way down the opposite ridge hoping to catch him crossing. When I got down, I saw Brian sneaking over the ridge, then glassing. He saw something, and I just knew it was the bucks, they had ran about 200 yards and stopped. Brian crept down the hill to the trees the deer had started in got a good rest in the trees. I still couldn't see below me, but knew he could. BOOM!, the 1st shot went off and nothing... he stood there, reloaded, and BOOM!, 2nd shot. I couldn't believe he could still see them. BOOM!, a 3rd shot... and then a rebel yell across the canyon. Woo-Hoo! Yeah, yeah, yeah! I knew it... he nailed it. Sure enough, I hiked down the canyon (the one I didn't want to be in originally) to see his buck and be overcome with jealousy. Teach me to not go the extra mile... Anyway, he hit the buck with his 1st and 3rd shots from about 250 yards. He taped at 26", 4x4, good mass, long tines and unnofficially scored 170-1/4". Also, Brian took up his neighbor and helped her bag this 21" 4x4 on the rifle hunt, Oct.29th.
