Would you gamble and shoot this bull at 14 yards?

14 yds with a rifle, absolutely, A clean shot to the head would be my choice.

Coon

Yes if he stood there long enough for me to pull my bow back.

Keep them coming I like these kind of post a lot more than the argue post as of late.

Thanks for posting them and can't wait for the story.

"A clean shot to the head would be my choice."

Really you would split his skull and risk blowing the horns all to bits?

LAST EDITED ON Jan-20-08 AT 10:54PM (MST)[p]This is a bull I called in from a wallow one evening, this bull was judged before we stopped this bull at 14 yards with a cow call.Do you think the hunter will take this bull with the shot he has? This is more realistic pictures of what kind of quick decisions you have to make in the field.Just kind of fun reading what others would do.The hunter is to my right and does not need to worry about the branches that you see in the picture. Also notice the hunter is very legal wearing orange those bulls dont care what colors you wear.

That is a big bull, long mains and great width.

I take the shot.

The next little bit is priceless, sometimes they are huge and sometimes they're not. The two biggest bulls I've ever killed were under this situation. Close quarters, no time to judge other than you know they are big.

On a once in a lifetime tag maybe not, under a normal hunting scenario (DIY, Public);

SHOOT.

Looking at the bulls you have taken or have been hunting. I think you pass on this bull. He is wide but looks to be lacking in mass and point length in the browtine area. But the photo is hard to judge size. My guess is a 340 bull but probably wrong.

If it was me, all of you guy's would be looking at that bull dead on the ground with me and a huge smile posing for the camera. What about you ridgefire?

From that angle...not with my bow..to many branches and little twigs in the way and a deflected arrow could lead to a real headache.

The hunter decided to pass on this bull long before we stopped him with a cow call in the first picture.I wonder if this bull would have hit the dirt on one of the management elk units?
Good call Robb on the first picture those tiny twigs could deflect an arrow or bullet so easy even at close range. The cameraman should not take that shot from the angle he has in the upper very top photo but the hunter may have had a better angle and lane to take him if the bull was not busted.

We called this young bull in on the same hunt.
Would this bull be legal on one of the management elk units?
Make sure and count his points this goes to show you how easy it would be to make a mistake counting points even when the bull is very close.

Here let me give you a little better look.
HOW MANY POINTS DOES THIS BULL HAVE?
Is he a legal management bull?
5x6 he would be legal if he is a 6x6 you are busted.
Do you let this bull walk even if it was the last day of your management hunt?
Does this bull have G-2s?

This bull was legal if you were hunting a management hunt the left side is a 5 point and his right is a 6 point.
The hunter let this bull walk away this unit holds some nice bulls.

Thought you would want to hear the rest of this hunting story. This bull was seen and judged by the hunter before the bull was called in but this is the only shot he had so he decided to pass on this shot. The bull bugled and walked off to get back with his cows.We moved forward and found the bull with his cows. The hunter made two good shots on the bull and rest is history.

Good looking bull BIRDUM, to bad he is missing his g2 on his left side. Love the area you were in, at least I believe I recongize the area.

That small 5X6 is cool looking as well, I love the curly hair on his forehead. I have seen a few bulls on that unit with, what I call a 'Herford head'. In fact, I had an archer this last fall harvest a bull that had practically an afro.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-21-08 AT 12:13PM (MST)[p]The bull that was harvested on this hunt was bald on top of his head have you ever seen a bull that has rubbed so hard has left the top of his head bald? This bull also had a puncture wound from a antler that was infected and plenty of character scars.Neat bull and that had to be one of my favorite hunts to help on we had a blast at camp after the elk was taken care of thats for sure. The unit is just east of the unit you like Pro.
Yea I have never heard of afro bulls but that 5x6 had something going up top.HA
Hope my bud dont mind me posting pics of his hunt up on MM.
Just thought I would show how hard it is to sometimes judge bulls.

Warbirdum: One of the better posts on here in a while man.... Thanks for postin'.

redelkarcher,
Thanks I enjoy reading and looking at other guys hunt pictures and stories thought I would share some of our hunts. We all needed a small break from all the arguments about elk management for a change. Not that I dont like reading everyones opinions on that subject but it is starting to get old.Lets get back to some hunting stories and pictures.

The 5x6 in the picture would probably only be considered a 5x5 by the DWR. I had a management tag this past year and killed a 5x6. The side with the 5 points had a small 7/8 inch point that could have made it a 6x6. I was super nervous when I had my bull checked by the DWR because of this small point. I mean really if I wanted to kill a six pints I would have. I saw two or three awesome bulls that were six points. Anyway, to make a long story short the CO told me that a point for this particular hunt had to be at least and inch and a half long. The reason he said was because of the difficulty in seeing the smaller points from a long distance. He didn't even blink an eye at the point let alone measure it. We watched my bull for about 20 minutes and had 3 scopes on him and nobody was able to see his little point on the back end. Just my two bits.

Igottabigone2,
The little 5x6 bull in the photos was not on a management unit I measure anything that is 1" or longer to count as a point in my rule book. I had no idea how the DWR would measure the point to be legal. The other side is for sure a 5 point which would make this bull legal anyway I think. Thanks for that information glad they did not give you any trouble with your bull.

The muddy bull you did not shoot brings back memories. I love wallowing bulls! Mine was black as you can imagine.
Thanks again War! very good post and lots of fun.

Hell ya, shoot away! With a rifle that is a no problem shot.

Timberline

bowhunt,
Those muddy bulls that come in fresh off a wallow are fun to watch you can smell them coming from a good distance if you have the wind in your favor. This bull just hung around for a while he could not figure out where the cow or bull was that was making all the sounds. The picture of him coming head on was kind of funny when I was filming him I was only looking at him through my view finder in the camera and was cow calling. I new he was getting rather close but when I moved the camera away from my eye he was about 15 yards closer than it looked viewing through my camera eye piece. I was thinking elk rodeo at that time and moved a little when he seen that he bolted to my right and we stopped him with a cow call, it would have been a great video if that bull wouldnt have been busted but it sure is fun when you can go back to camp and watch the action from the day.
Its to bad I did not get the fight on film of him busting that main beam or the bull that he got in the fight with.
Hope all is well glad to hear from you good luck in the draws this year.

If you were full drawn with a bow and are about to let down because you have been holding it back to long and know you would be busted if you do.How many archers out there would take this shot at 30 plus yards? That would be threading the needle on that one.

I would let Curly go. If you are lucky, you spook the bull the right way when letting down your draw. Rarely happens, but you can hope.

I am sure some could thread the needle but I would be afraid of the animal jumping at the release of the arrow and making a bad hit even if I could shoot real well.It would be fun to shoot a 3-D target but that would be risky as hell taking that shot.It would make a guy about half sick if that was a 400 plus standing there and you just cant keep drawn back any longer and praying he moves to your left a little.Sure seems like bulls know when to stop and keep the ol boiler room covered up dont they?
