Hey Guys,

I am looking for information on Unit 2 Cow Elk hunt and am hoping someone is willing to help me out. Myself and my brother are looking to hunt unit 2 for Cow elk as a prescouting trip for adventually drawing a bull tag (we currently have 16 PP for ELK). I am hoping that someone can help us out we would like information on landowners that offer trespass hunts as well as any other information on camping and hunting that unit. Thanks in advance for the help.

you wont need to pay for trespass. hunt cold springs mnt and you wont have a problem finding elk

So would you recommend Unit 2 for general DIY cow elk hunting?

My father and I have hunted Units southeast of there for a number of years and are looking for someplace new. It appears from the 2006 data (last that I could find on the CDOW website) that cow elk tags are easy to draw for this unit. Would you recommend it in general for public land only hunting?

My buddy and I did that same thing last year. Probelm is if you have 16 NR points for area two you better wait 10 years before you do this hunt. We have 17 NR PP and I see no way we will draw that tag for at least that long since the change in CO.
That being said we had a good time and took a couple nice cows. It was not a cake walk though we had a hard time finding a cow. We saw 28 bulls in the first 3 days and no cows. On the forth day we found a few. Very easy access in the area.

My dad drew a bull tag in 2 last year and i have to say that there are probably more bulls in that unit than cows no lie. Most of the bulls that had cows had like 5 or 6 and most of the big bulls didn't have any. You actually will have to work to find a cow its not as easy as it sounds. But it will help you gain valuable information for when you draw. Look up Wanda Walker she as tons of property all over the unit on douglas mountain that borders the monument and Zenobia peak but she's also got tons of property around vermillion creek. And best of all she only chargers 200 dollars. Good old lady not into the money and charging the big $$$$$$ cause she damn well could.

Thanks for all the information this is a great forum. Hunters helping Hunters.

Tracker Thanks for the info I had a feeling it may take many years to draw unit 2 with only 16pp at this time. I guess I should start looking at other units to draw. I wish CO would change some of the rules around the PP system. I wish they would bring back the banking system at least that way I could use my 16 points to go on 2-3 decent hunts. Tracker good luck I hope you can eventually draw. I am kind of in a hard place to many points to blow on some units but may never get the top units.

I second the bank issue. I wish they would do that also. With 17 I think I am going to look at area 10 archery. Unless someone jumps ship I may be able to draw.

I would have to agree, you probably won't be able to draw a tag for that unit for along time, if at all, you may always be just a step two behind every year. You can check out unit 61. It is coming around to be one of the better units in Colorado for some trophy bulls. I don't think it will stack up to unit 2 as of yet, but I believe it will be there in the very near future. If you are looking for a good bull, 340 or above, this might be a place to look at. I am not sure what it takes exactly, but I would think it is taking about 8-10 for archery and more for that rifle tag.

Again, thanks for all the info. I think unit 2 will be a tough draw for many years. Too many people with 1-2 points more than myself. I have started to look into other options and unit 61 is one I am looking into. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
