For those of you who still have hunts left, here is some inspiration from the good ole days. This buck was taken by my uncle in New Mexico back in 1964.

This buck was taken in what is now referred to in the NM proclamation as Unit 51. Back then (actually up until the '80s)it was all over the counter, and you could hunt state wide, with the exception of private land. It's net score is 255 6/8. The taxidermy is getting up there in years. My cousins and I are trying to convince our uncle to remount the buck on one of the pedestal mounts. The ones I've seen in taxidermy shops are pretty sharp!

I'd recomend Valentine Taxidermy (719) 547-3404 for a new cap and mount. My uncle went a few years without a harvest and got so frusterated he decided to remount a very old large non-typical. The new mount is Fantastic, especially with the different pedestal mount, it looked quite horrible.

He put some clear shellac back when he killed it. The antlers were already that color, but the clear of course brings out the color more. He was only 17 when he shot it. It wasn't mounted until 1979 I believe.

I love those long sweeping main beams! It's been 40 years and it's still a great buck. Big bucks never go out of style.

Thanks everyone for the comments! If you think about the bucks that were taken back then, it is just incredible. Just in NM alone, when my uncle took this buck in 1964, if you look at the 3 year span from 1963 - 1965, the bucks that were taken in NM alone were incredible; the Mundy buck, and both NM state records (Typ and Non-typ) were taken in that time frame. My uncle even tells me that 30" bucks, while never really "common," weren't what they were looking for back then. They had their sights set higher, and it wasn't a long shot. Must have been nice to walk through the forest back then with a deer tag in hand!

cool buck. just the back forks would make a heck of a rack. dang, that's a nice buck.
