Rutting Activity

Dumb question but here goes. When does the rut for muleys kick in? I have been out checking on the deer herds and have noticed groups of anywhere from 10-20 does/fawns etc together but no BIG boys chasing them around yet.

I saw a wimpish 3 point chasing a doe around today .and a decent 4 point with a couple of does but none of the big bucks that should be there (minus the one I took).

Any ideas ?

I saw a 27" 3x3 chasing a doe last week. I'd say its started. Maybe not in full swing but the rut is on!

The 4pt my wife got opening weekend of the utah deer hunt (23rd) was absolutely rutting. We drove over a mile across open terrain right up to him 200 yards away and he could care less, had a bit of a swollen neck etc etc. Depends on region but right around Nov 1st always has rutting deer around here, cooler weather can bump it up a week or so.

It definitely varies alot. Boneaddict has pics of that buck breeding a doe on the 4th I think it was. That seemed super early to me??? I figured breeding wouldn't take place till maybe the 15th!!??!?

I know this guy thinks the rut is on....

Driving home tonight I watched a big 3x3 covering a doe. She would stand and he would cover her, she would trot off a little way and stop and the process would repeat. He mounted her three times while I stopped and watched. Less than 30 yds from the road and me with no camera!!

DK, I think he was trying to give you a kiss (thinking maybe you wouldn't then nail him next year)! Pretty cool pic!

Theodore Roosevelt once said, "The nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation, INCREASED and NOT IMPAIRED in value."

As Of the first week of Nov., I saw some heavy ruttin action
near Kremmling, Co. The big ones were already losing fat on their backs.
