Calling Elk Late Season

I have a question for all you expert elk hunters out there! I hunt in Oregon quite often during the first or second week of November. How would any of you suggest attempting to call a bull in this time of year?

Thanks,
Steve

As you already know, elk are vocal all times of the year.A cow call is good to call all elk .When you call to the cows the bulls will often fallow, not the same as the prime rut,but they still communicate with each other.Soft calls on a cow call and other elk may come just to investigate!

I agree with the cow call in the late season. Just leave the bugle at home. I had a late season LE elk hunt here in utah last year on the manti unit. The bulls and cows were very vocal. However, when I broke the bugle out, the bulls would move the opposite direction. When I used the cow call, the cows and bulls would answer back almost immediately. I had quite a few elk investigate my cow calls! I did not kill my bull by using an elk call, just walked around a ridge and saw my 6 point grazing with about 75 cows and one spike right at first light, 5th day of the hunt which fell on November 15th.

A bit extreme, but I'd rattle before a cow call in Nov. I've watched bulls push each other around into Dec, and when they really get after it other bulls move in.

Thank you all very much for your advise. I have heard of people bugling before light and getting bulls to bugle back, then moving in before daybreak and cow calling at closer ranges. Has anybody had any experience with this method?

Thanks

Most of the bulls in Nevada you cant call in past October.

That works good if it is near the rut but you will be hunting after the rut and you can't count on a bull to bugle, even though they do bugle late,it does not happen as often as in the rut and not often enough to locate and move in.

3rd season Co last year I had several bulls bugling around me on 2 occasions. Mega cow talk 2. Most of my 40+ elk hunts have been in or near the rut and have never before heard bulls bugling in Nov but based on my experence last year and the above Info, I'll pay more attention in the future.

Not saying you could call in with a bugle, just that they were vocal enough you could sneak and kill with a rifle.

I strictly use my bugle to locate the bulls and then move in on them if you can. If you move in closer, you might be able to bugle back a couple of times to keep up the interest, but most of the time I would go with a cow call and try and pull the bull from his herd. Watch out for them satellite bulls though, they can ruin a good thing really quick. Can never go wrong with the cow call. As far as calling late in the season, definitely, leave that bugle home and break out all the cow calls. I use three different types of cow calls, but prefer the diaphram call the best, especially to stop the elk for the shot. Hope that helps out a bit.
