Utah-Youth Elk Hunt

I have a question about the Youth Elk Hunt. First, If a youth applies for this hunt, it is my understanding that he or she cannot apply for a LE Elk hunt.

If this is the case, can the applicant still accrue bonus points for the LE elk hunt? If not, youth would give up 6-7
bonus points for the LE Elk (before they turn 18). Also, the youth hunt offers no preference or bonus points.

Now, I think the youth hunt is a great idea. However, some may find giving up bonus points too much of a sacrifice IMO.

Also, is there a "draw odds" report for the Youth Elk hunt? I have not been able to find it. Thanks!!

Woodruffhunter,
Your Son/Daughter can indeed put in for a youth any bull tag AND for limited entry elk. I have put my daughter in for two years now. They do get points for the LE hunt, but they will only draw one tag, and I cannot remember which one is drawn for first.

That's good to know!

Here is the order they draw (from the 08 guidebook):

Second?bull elk (premium limited entry, limited entry, management bull elk and CWMU)
Third?buck pronghorn (limited entry and CWMU)
Fourth?once-in-a-lifetime
Fifth?youth general buck deer
Sixth?general buck deer and general buck/bull combination
Last?youth any bull elk

You can indeed apply for both tags in the same year. I put my son in for both, and he drew the youth tag in 2005. Thanks to some help from Robb, aka PleaseDear (Bullelk1 on bowsite), we had a nice hunt. My son didn't kill a bull, but passed up several opportunities at a 300-310 class bull. Most people consider this hunt to be a non-trophy hunt, but my son would have been thrilled to shoot that bull, just didn't have a shot he was comfortable taking, due to too many other elk around him each time. He had about 30+ cows with him, and was rutting like mad. I wish we could do it all over again, but it's a once in a lifetime tag for a kid.

He's got 8 points now for LE elk, soon to be 9 points.
