Everyone-

Returned yesterday from a 9 day long trip in unit 16. We hunted the Aldo Leopold Wilderness area. Pictures of my back will be at the bottom. My cousin jumped a 30 incher (so he says) but didn't get a shot off.

congrats!

also, get that cape out of that black plastic bag asap. use white or clear instead.

Cameron,

Thanks for the congrats!

The Aldo is in the Gila north of Silver City about 60 miles.

Very nice buck!!! Congrats!!!
Actually, any plastic bag is bad for the cape, but black does hold more heat. You're better off with a game bag. The problem with plastic is it leaves the cape in a pool of blood and fluids where bacteria grows. Bacteria is what causes the epidermis to slip.

nmtaxi,

Thanks for the advice, but I ended up cutting his cape back a little short. So I was forced to go with a Skull/European mount. That's a mistake that won't happen again!!

nmtaxi,

I feel the same way about it. I didn't try looking for a cape, I'm just using it for motivation to find a bigger one next year!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-15-04 AT 04:11PM (MST)[p]Fellas, I read what you told him about the black plastic bags. I killed a trophy buck on 10/31 and had the thing caped out for a mount. I wasn't able to get it to the guy in Idaho right away so I stuck it in a freezer, still in that bag.

Did I mess up that cape ? I wouldn't use another cape for this mount. So if it is messed up I guess its not getting mounted

Nice buck Congratulations! It appears the hunter seems to be a little happy in the photos as well! He's a dandy and should make a fine mount however you do it. Your taxidermist may have a cape that you can buy if you change your mind. Congratulations again and enjoy!

You should be fine. Sticking it in a black plastice bag doesn't automatically ruin a cape. It's just being cautious. If it's in the freezer, that will keep in bacteria from growing. My freezer is full of capes in black plastic bags. I would just recommend not doing it out in the field, when it is fairly warm. You greatly increase your chances of getting slippage.

WHEW- thanks NMTaxi. Smiling big looking like the Joker huh ? I know that feeling well Curlee. I hope to feel it every year from now on
