Anybody had any success in there yet. I went down on Sunday and only saw one nice buck, but I did see over 150 deer. I hope the big boys start moving down out of the high country.

I've been out once and only saw on nice buck myself. Lot's of does though. I am hunting the breaks of lucky peak how about you?

I've been hunting the hills between Lucky Peak and Anderson; Below the South Fork of the Boise River. The big boys should be down soon. I think this inversion might have something to do with it.

I went up last Thursday and got into a few. Nothing big yet though. The best being a 140-145" clean 4 point. I'll be up for 4 days starting Friday so I hope it gets better. I'm still hunting high hoping to catch the big ones coming down still.

My dad and two brothers were up there last weekend and seen a few small bucks.....one pretty nice buck but it only had one side or it would have been in trouble. We are headed up to hunt it again this weekend...I will be along to video it if there comes a chance at anything.....so with me along we should definately spot more deer....HAHA

Went up again today and saw only one decent buck. Watched him chase a doe around until she finally gave up and let him mount her. I was up there last night though and saw two nice bucks. Biggest was a 25-26" 4x4 with great eyeguards. Hope to be back to it in the morning.

Sounds like the hunt's getting better. I'll be in Boise this weekend for the Louisana Tech game, and then I'll be going out on Sunday. Good luck to everyone.

Kicker, I'm from Hailey.
Went out today, and I saw a decent amount of deer. The same nice, heavy buck that I saw last week and a huge buck from about 2 miles away. I saw it come over the skyline and I bet it was about 30-30. Huge! It looked like a small elk. Anyways it was a fun day. How about the Broncos. Kicked LA Techs butt!

Went out to help my dad and brothers on saturday....my oldest brother and and I went one way and my dad and other brother went another way.
They seen a really good buck about 26" wide and around 20" tall...but they said he was a massive 4 point.
My brother and I seen 3 does....he wanted to shoot one so we did a quick 3/4 mile stalk across the road and up the opposite hill....got within about 50 yards before we lost cover and a doe we hadnt seen spotted us and jumped up. On the stalk my brother found a 5 point elk shed.
Might go out next weekend to see what else is running around.

Hey Dittmer, yeah they looked like the broncos from the beggining of the season. When their offense get's to rollin' you can't stop them.

Have you ever hunted that late bowhunt in 53 around Twin? I've heard that can be good.

Hey Kicker,
I'm from Meridian also. I was up in unit 39 on the 13th and saw about 75 does and 4-5 bucks. One shooter in my book with about a 24" spread, good forks and descent mass. I figured he was pushing 170".

Unfortuneatly I broke the number one rule...wind. I put a good stalk on him and got to within 50 yards but tried to better my advantage and cut him off as he walked beneath a rock bluff. I told myself over and over that the wind was bad... and it was. If my number two rule, patience, would have persisted then rule number one wouldn't have been an issue.

That's the breaks of bow hunting mule deer I guess. I hunted all season in lew of a public land buck of this caliber and when it comes down to it impatience took over.

But, I'll be back up after him for 3 days after turkey day. The other break of bow hunting mule deer in Idaho :)

Oh yeah, I have hunted the late 53 and have taken two buck with my bow in December. I grew up in that area. There is some real fun hunting that way if the snow comes. I found an excellent wintering spot last year in unit 55 and on the last day of the season was fortuneate to play with 13 bucks, 7 of which were 4 points or bigger and about 60 does.

If the snow comes, and I don't punch my tag in 39, I know where I'll be for a 3 day weekend starting December 17th.

Good luck!

Hey guys, Chris here. I am from Nampa. I was up above arrowrock res. on sat. and saw a couple of decent (22"-26")bucks, even got to watch a couple bucks fighting, that was exciting. The weather was nice, but the ground and brush was very noisy. I keep hoping for some snow!!! I have been thinking about doing the unit 55 hunt myself if 39 doesn't pay off first. any good places to start looking? I am not asking for anyones "secret spot" just maybe someplace that I am likely to find some deer. Thanks. good luck to you all.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-22-04 AT 07:11PM (MST)[p]I used to live in Eden and hunted a lot of coyotes there in the 80's.(Unit 53 ) That is what taught me where the deer were. I have killed 12 4 pt. bucks in that unit in the last 18 yrs. Sadly, I have missed the only truly huge buck I had a chance at he was 28"-30" wide with 9 pts on one side and 13 on the other with a curly dropper off the left main beam..REALLY heavy. I spent 3 weeks for a chance at him and botched it at 25 yds. He ducked as the arrow was released and the arrow just grazed his back. I was aiming too high. I know that now from experience. Aim for the heart. He was later poached and his head cut off with the body left to rot,It is a fun unit but there was then and continues to be a lot of poaching going on there. I think it may be one of the best units in the state if it were not for that. There are still some huge bucks there though....dont think there arent.

Hey guys I'm over in E. Boise near Hwy 21. I've been up a couple of times but haven't slung an arrow yet. I've seen a couple of decent bucks but nothing bigger than a 20-22in. 4X4. At this point I just want to get my first buck with a bow, so anything will do. Have any of you heard of anything decent being shot? Good luck to all.

I was up for the last 4 days. Saw a few nice bucks with only one shooter. He was a 6X5, 30+" wide. He had decent mass and had about 4" broke off his G2. He was a real nice looking deer. Unfortunetly he spotted me first so I couldn't make a move on him. I saw him the next day but another hunter busted him out before I could work him.

We also saw 3 mountain lions. A female with 2 kittens. The kittens were older and just a little smaller then momma. It was pretty cool seeing them. We watched them for a good 30 minutes.

Found a 2X3 that was shot and lost and also found a 5 point elk shed. So all in all the weekend was a success.

I'll be back the last 3 days of the season.

Good luck to all,
IB

Kicker, I haven't hunted 53. I've heard mixed reviews about it. I think it depends on when the snow comes. I've seen a ton of deer down there in January, but never too many earlier in the year. We definately need snow. It's almost December and the ground is still bare at about 7,000 feet.

I gave unit 39 another go around on the 26th. I saw a total of 7 bucks. One descent 22" 4-point, an average 3x3 and the rest forkies. The buck to doe ratio in this unit is out of control. I was seeing 30+ does without a buck in the group. Granted the rut is slowing down but still!

I guess it is just hard to believe that many does' without a mature buck or no buck at all especially when one road over in unit 45 there is 4-points everywhere. Oh well, it was still a fun day. I was able to get fairly close to the 22" buck but there were too many eyes watching me so I couldn't get within bow range.

On a different note: I ran down to unit 55 on Saturday and the awesome spot I found last year was booming. I chased several deer all day but was holding out for a nice non-typical I had spotted earlier in the morning. I had a couple opportunities to take pictures of him but it was snowing all day and I'm sure the photo's wouldn't have done the buck justice.

I did have a lot of fun, especially when I was holding tight and had a doe and fawn walked within 5 yards of me. I had two does' and a small forky all within 20 yards at one point.

Hopefully I will get to go back down over the last weekend this hunt is open. Rumor has it that the same non-typical (4x9) I saw last year is still hanging around but this year he is a big 4 on one side and a big stump on the other.
