NEW TO MM FORUM JUST LOOKING FOR SOME INPUT ON PUBLIC LAND DIY ELK MORE BRAWN THAN BRAINS WOULD LIKE TO GET AWAY FROM ROADS

Well were would you like me to start? Ok getting a tag: Good luck in most states. There are a few over the counter tags available out there. Az has some over the counter archery tags (Gilas Tag Service may have more info)

Caliber rifle--- although .270 is capable, most elk hunters will use more gun than that- i wont get into the caliber debate now but 7mm will do.

So lets see, you have a tag and a rifle. That just about does it
just show up in your area on the opening day(no need to scout you can always ask MM'ers if there are any elk in the area).Park your hunting rig at the end of the road. Start hiking. It shouldn't be too long a hike if we've done your scouting right, and you'll be knee deep in 400 inch bulls fighting to be the one for your wall.

was that too much info? Narrow your questioning down! It seems like you're asking us to plan a pack-in elk hunt for you, and normally that doesn't fly too well, but if youu ask a specific question, most of us are willing to throw some info your way!

Most of this reply has a ton of sarcasm- but not all of it. Ask some questions about a specific state. and we'll go from there.

Twister Tim,

First off, where are you from and which state are you interested in hunting this year, got to narrow it down for some help here.
Colorado has OTC bull Elk tags, get a copy of the regulations and look through it. How far are you willing to travel to go hunting?

If you go right up above this Elk Forum and look for the word "Search", click on that link and TYPE in ELK and which ever state you want info on, kick back and start reading and get some ideas on the states and locations where others have hunted.
Also go down to the bottom of these Forums and click on the state you are interested in and read what others have said there too.

Hate to say it but others will see that this is your first post and will be reluctant to answer, but others will help you some.

Good luck on your search and then when you have picked an area or state, then ask some more questions.

In 1976 I never had the sources like we do now, no computers and it was only "winging it" just got in the PU and drove to Colorado and started looking for a spot to hunt that looked good. Granted you can't do that now as there are too many hunters but I think you get the idea. A lot of Nat. Forest there in CO, maybe not no big bulls but at least you will get an idea of the area.

As i know nothing about Colorado i will defer to those that do!
I'm a utard, and would be happy to answer any questions or find you the person that knows the answer if you have any utard questions.

no offense taken i am new to this computer stuff i have two points in utah talk toyou in about 10 years tageater

LAST EDITED ON Feb-22-08 AT 02:43PM (MST)[p]if you have two points then you have alot more than 10 years ahead of you unless you get real lucky.. there are over 50,000 Res people that have more than two points and 13,000 NR that have more than 2 points. Good Luck in about 25 to 40 years.

I myself do not play the pref points game.I know plenty of good elk areas in Colorado that you do not need any points.I only buy a point so I can muzzy hunt every other year.

Try this link to the CDOW. I live in Illinois and hunt in Colorado on public ground. We are into bulls every year and I did all of my scouting on the internet. It can be done if you put in the effort. The bulls we are into every year are in the 320-350 class. The herd bulls are awesome. Just get away from the roads and hunt hard.

i was hoping to be one of those long shot draw guys that get the tag with few points maybe i am wishful thinking

Brian,

Maybe under the "Tips" section you should create a "HomeWork" doc with some pointers for new hunters?

i.e. check F&G stats, MM archives, asking forum questions, scouting tools (pre and post) bla, bla, bla. Not going real deep but get them started?
