Measuring your own buck ?

I got a question im measuring my buck i got his year I read the boone and crocketts website about it . The only thing they didnt explain well was where to start measuring the g2 , g3 , and g4 . Its confusing I know you start the g4 from the main beam but the antler is wide and round where exactly do I start the tape . I know you go on the outside of the antler . I hope I sound right by what I am saying . Any help will be appreciatied.

RE: Measuring your own buck ?

Cameron, I believe you begin your measurement from the near edge of the main beam (ie, where the anter point intersects the main beam).

LAST EDITED ON Nov-19-04 AT 06:47AM (MST)[p]Pretend like you were taking a small hand saw and cutting the tine off flush with the main beam as close as possible without leaving part of the tine or cutting into the main beam. Make a small pencil mark on the antler where you picture that cut mark and measure along the center of the tine following the curve on the outside.

WARNING!!!! For those of you who dropped out of high school early to become Utah Governor's tag deer guides, DON'T ACTUALLY CUT THE RACK. You don't have to cut the tines off to measure them. Just show a little patience(kind of like when you see a big buck on the winter range and you don't shoot him then
but wait until an actual season and try and hunt him legally) and work on that 4th grade math adding up the measurements. It gets easier the longer you do it. Trust me.

Also avoid using the Mattel "Little Carpenter" rubber tape measure. While its cute, colorful and safe if you put it in your mouth, it tends to stretch and give you additional inches of score. With so many big buck "Experts" on this website, these salty old deer hunting veterans will immediately see through your enhanced score and you will lose credibility in their eyes like I have.

RE: Measuring your own buck ?

Does graduating from high school exclude me from ever becoming a gov tag guide? Is it mandatory to NOT have graduated? Ah hell I'm to old for stomping around in crotch deep snow anyway.

RE: Measuring your own buck ?

NO exclusions based on a GED or diploma. Its purely a generalization. Does that have too many letters?

RE: Measuring your own buck ?

HEY BUCKSPY!! That is Hilarious!
GREAT WARNING!! LMAO
The sad part of the whole deal is there is some truth to that statement!!
And I'm with GrandpaNasty, sounds like we have eliminated ourselves from that job!! And if you've been to college, don't even fill out an application..LOL

I'm afraid nowdays that you would have to stand in a long waiting line to get one of those "gov tag" jobs anyhow. Seems everyone you talk to on the mountain is "guiding" somebody.
And everyone of them knows where a 400 inch bull is, or just seen a 36" buck.
Wonder why when they draw out, all the big animals seen to dissapear!!! Strange!

RE: Measuring your own buck ?

Of course its all "Toungue in cheek" a*r. Just some levity for those who feel like the are being oppressed by the honky white devil. L-E-V-I-T-Y. You budding deer guides find a dictionary and look it up.

RE: Measuring your own buck ?

I had him tied to the tree, but some do-gooder, tree hugger, felt sorry for him and cut him loose. I was feeding him vitamin and steriod enriched grain too, with lots of water. Damn it, that was hard work netting that sucker from my chute plane.

RE: Measuring your own buck ?

Follow the edge of the mainbeam and put a piece of white marking tape where the point meets the mainbeam. The continuation of the mainbeam will be your tape. This enables an exact measurement.

That's one way awesome tape! To be able to stretch it, and still get a-d-d-i-t-i-o-n-a-l inches out of it???
