I am from NY and am not familiar with Mule deer size.Years ago when Outdoor Life was the magazine I read ,there was a guy named Kurt Darner from Co. that shot deer in the high 30" width size.I do not recall many deer that big anymore.Have the size of mule deer diminished over the years,or his he just a lucky hunter back in the 1970's.Thanks for any input.

I would certainly say that there are not the number of huge mule deer that there once was, particularly during the glory years 1950's- 1970's. If you look at the pictures in this forum, you can see that there are still a few big ones out there. As far as Kirk Darner, I would think he is a little more than just a lucky hunter. He has at least 10 heads that "went" book.

If I'm not mistaken, I think he has zero heads that make book, because he was caught poaching, and Boone yanked all of his trophies. Someone can correct me if this is misinformation. As far as diminishing, I don't think genes have, obvious by the record book heads that we have been seeing, but it takes years for a big set of horns to mature, and its getting harder for a deer to make it that long for numerous reasons. Mostly, there are alot more people out there than the glory years of the 50's-70's, mismanagement, predation, technology, habitat, etc.
