My good friend Sam took this really great buck on the NM Public hunt.

SWNM in not known for really big Desert muley bucks, so this is quite an accommplishment.

Good job Slammer! :)

I writer I'm not. But, I do have a story on this guy if you can bear with my literary shortcomings.

My hunting partner and I spotted a small fork horn about 800 yards across a canyon. Both of us agreed he was acting awful respectful for some reason so we moved in closer for a look see. At about 400 yards my 10X25 Zeiss pocket binos picked up some antlers under a pinion tree with heavy brush all around it. We made our way to a small hill that gave us a clear view of the bedded buck.
I found a dead tree that made a perfect rest for my 25/06. The range was about 230 yds and I had an eagle?s eye view of all the bucks? possible escape routs. My buddy began rolling rocks breaking branches, whistling & yelling. For all his efforts the buck did not move or so much as twitch an ear. So he worked his way over to the buck till he was within 80ft or so and threw rocks at the tree till his arm gave out. I actually saw a rocks landing by the buck in my scope. I was beyond words when I saw the buck close his eye to take a little nap.
My sore-armed buddy yelled ?Can you shoot him in the head? My &#$%^ arms tired?
I replied ?Yep.?
?Do it! That $ob ant gona budge!?
I took about 2 minutes or so and cleared my head took a long deep breath? The 117 gr. Sierra entered his neck just below the jaw and clipped the opposite jaw bone on the way out. A finisher sped up his eternal nap.

Good optics are worth every penny. My buddy?s binos couldn't even make out the buck at 230 yards. The buck?s bed was so tight he must of had to belly crawl about 3ft just to get into his bed.

Congrats to your buddy Sam.
Unique looking acorn type bumps on the rack as well.
Thanks for sharing.
Best,
Jerry

If you shot that buck near the area where the picture is taken I know exactly the area you were hunting. I used to live there? Good buck, I haven't seen deer in that are like that for a long long time.nmhs

Caleb...is Pat your brother? The pic was taken in Gila, but I don't think that buck came from there.

Yeah I'm from Silver City. I've known Pat for a long time. He used to date my cousin Tina. I talked to him last year up by gooselake during the archery deer hunt in January. How's he doing?

He is doing good, I will see him tomorrow at my dads. He has been busy since he started his govt. trapping job. Have a good thanksgiving. Small world?

So are you going out for the jan hunt? Are you going around the silver city area and gooselake? I have seen some nice deer this. A lot more and a lot bigger than I have seen in several years. Do you know Chris Alirez from bayard, his dad works for the TNM power company?

I pretty much have given up on Gooselake area, to many hunters. I've found another potential honey hole in the Mogollon Mts. I'm headed back up there next weekend to set up the tree stand.

Chris Alirez, sounds familiar, but can't remember for sure.

Tell Pat that Tommy Maldonado said "hey"

Happy Thanksgiving
