I'm a blacktail hunter for Northern CA looking to go to Montana .My father-in-law lives in Darby MT witch is in the S/W part of the state.I'm looking at dear/elk combo with rifle in that part of the state. Can anyone out there give me an idea about where I should put in for? Any hot spots that I could get with few or no points?

Thanx form sick of small bucks

DR707,
Just apply for the General Big Game Combo tag in March and hope for the best. You have the Bitterroot Mtns on the west side of valley there in Darby. Hunted up there and south towards Sula back in 1981 during the second week of Nov. COLD,COLD and SNOW so have good clothing and not like what you hunt with here in good old CA.
Get some maps like the DeLorme Atlas for MT. Does for father-in-law hunt or any of the relatives in that area? They should know if they have lived there any lenght of time.

That area has a limited draw for mule deer on the east side of Bitterroot river (the toughest draw in the state) and an unlimited registration for the west side. They don't limit the tags for the west side, but you do have to commit to hunt the area and no where else. There are good numbers of elk.

Get the regs, you will have to apply for mule deer.
