I looked forward to the Montana Hunting season because it would be the first time one of my kids was old enough to pack a gun and have a chance to shoot. All of them have been with me many times hunting but this was the first season I could help them kill game. One nice thing about Montana is that the state gives the first year hunters, who pass hunters safety, their licenses and deer"A" tag free of charge to encourage kids to get out and hunt.
Here are some pics of the season and my daugher first buck. I know it isn't a monster but in my eyes it is a cherished trophy because I got to share this experience

Sucess!!! We spotted this buck on a hillside about 600 yards away and had to skirt around eight does to get to him. We end up on a ridge opposite of him. I range it for her and the LRF reads 281 yards. She puts down the bipods and get steady and asks me to range it again. Still reads 281 yards. She steadies and squeezes off a shot. The buck jumps and stumbles and rolls to the bottom of the hill stone cold dead. Perfect double lung shot.

Best and most rewarding experience I have ever had hunting

That is simply awesome! Big Congrats to that young lady and you and her whole family. I'm sure that was one of the best days ever. I can't wait to hunt with my kids. Great shootin! and that buck aint no slouch. Congrats again!

Thats some cool pics, your kids look like troopers.
I hope my 6 yr old daughter enjoys hunting like yours obviosly do.

Congratulations to your daughter and great payoff for a fantastic team effort. Kudos to you for taking them hunting and as you can see, the rewards you reap are far more than a buck and great memories, but a tear of happiness and pride in your eye!

Congrats to your daughter, that looks like some mighty wide open tough country to hunt.

Man that country looks familiar. Love hunting in Eatern MT myself. Big open country. Congrats to your Daughter on her first of what is most likely to become many memorable hunts.

Congratulations to you and your family! Awesome pics and sounds like a great experience. That country looks a lot like some areas down in SE MT also. I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old and right now I'm dreaming of the day I can take them out and do the same.

Congrats, I find it more rewarding when I help someone harvest than when I harvest myself. Great job!

It is in Montana but up in the North East corner. The pics of the spotting were taken in the Missouri Breaks on the north side of the lake. Where she finally took her deer is an interesting place that I really can't disclose. It is much more famous for it's whitetails.

Those pictures and smile tell it all. Can't wait for my turn with my girls. Congratulations on a great hunt and time well spent with family, they will never forget that day for sure. Thanks for posting!

That is great! Congratulations to you and your kids.
The smile on her face tells it all.
Thanks for sharing.
Best,
Jerry

Nemont: congrats and I sure know what it is like to have one of your kids with the tag.......Those memories will never ever leave you.....I know I was so pumped up for my son last year when he shot his antelope.........Hope you your daughter and son have many more years of hunting together....... Allen Taylor......

Congrats to your daughter and you too for the memorable hunt and a nice buck as well. Heck, I know that her buck is bigger than my first buck many years ago, and probably better than a lot of members here too for their first buck.
Thanks for posting the pictures. In those pictures where they are spotting, I think that on top there of those mountains looked like a repeater site for communications etc.

Congratulations to your daughter on a great buck - both of you should be very proud. I have two daughters (nearly 4, and 1 week old respectively) and can't wait to take them out with me. Nice pictures as well - thanks for posting.

nemo....congratulations to your daughter and you, also, to her brother, who did a fine job of spottin'...enjoy it while you can...'smiles go miles'

That's great!! Nothing better than taking your kids hunting. As they get older and start their own life's they will still go hunting with you. These times spent with your children will be some of the best memories you will have.

How did your hunt go? Send me a private message.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-04-04 AT 06:36AM (MST)[p] great job young lady thats a bigger buck than i got this year i was to picky and ended taking a two point the last hour of the last day.
I'll never forget when my doughter took her first deer in the bottom of salt and pepper canyon. she made a great shot, gutted it, then left it to me to get it out.
I have never shot another one there. it about killed me getting it out of there and left a life long impression of where not to shoot a deer.
that was 12 years ago and i still run out of oxigen thinking about it.
only shoot monster bucks in salt and pepper canyon.
everyone knows my son Moseley's hunting seccess and my youngest Autumn will not go even when i try to bribe her with letting her drive the truck. she is my girly girl and is to pritty she must be the swans mans kid. I have alway told her she is to pritty to be mine.I work out of town alot and when i'd come home the swans man would be at my house and as soon as he see's me he would leave.think i'm gunna go kick her mamma in the butt.
She use to tell me the swans man was ugly.
she is the apple of my eye and i sure wish she would go and do something with me. All i have found she really likes is shopping for clothes

WOW!!! That is much bigger than my first buck. I am a true believer that my most fun hunts are the ones that I have had with my son. I get more satisfaction out of watching him have fun and teaching him that I have ever had with taking game. I am sure you and your children are creating good life long memories and hopefully many more to be made with future hunts. Once again Congrats!! and good job.

Thanks everyone for the kudos. Hunting with my kids is the most fun I have ever had.

Congratulations to your daughter - a great buck. Heck of a shot at 281 yards! That is awesome that you are able to share that type of experience with your family like that. Great story, great photos - thanks for posting them.
Congrats again-

LAST EDITED ON Dec-06-04 AT 03:31PM (MST)[p]Hey Berto,
You should recognize the area they are spotting in. It is near where you hunted over when you were over here.

Congratulations. Looks like a nice family, a decent deer, and a perfect day. Your lucky in more ways than one.

Way to go. That is a trophy in my book. I hope to do the same some day with my daughter!!!

LAST EDITED ON Dec-07-04 AT 11:46AM (MST)[p]NeMont,

yep, i slept in the back of my truck very near where your kiddos were glassing..saw a 3x4 about the caliber of your daughter's buck not far from there :)

the problem for me was there was so much fog that i had absolutely NO CHANCE of seeing anything farther away than 30 yds...i wonder if the nice 4-pt i saw the day before made it thru?!?! i hope so, your daughter can chase it next year and stick you with a big taxidermy bill :) :) :)

that reminds me, i don't think i told you that i did the stupidest thing i have EVER done in my 20+ years of hunting...i left my rifle leaning against the truck and drove off after a long day of hunting not far from where you took the pics...i didn't even realize my rifle was missing til the next morning just before shooting light, DUHHHHHHH :7 i drove 85 mph back to the spot (it still took me awhile to get there...seemed like an eternity) i had parked and thank God my rifle was laying there in the dirt all covered in frost, not a bit of damage to it either...couple sets of fresh tire tracks on the road from road hunters that morning, too. it's a true miracle that no road hunter saw it before i could get back there and pick it up...my rifle is stainless steel and sticks out like a sore thumb, goes to show you the quality of road hunters that day!

again, congrats to your daughter and kudos to you!

I hope my girls when they are old enough share the passion.
Congratulation!

NEmont, High five to your daughter. Oh, and you and your son for helping. Looks like they are being started off right. Excellent buck. My daughter is starting to show interest in hunting at 8 years. Makes me happy. I recognize those mud buttes. I like em better when they are dry! Thanks again for your past help. mtmuley

Great post! Way to take the time and get some good photos. Hope there are many more hunts to come.
