Question regarding NM's new point restriction

Just wondering what everyone thought of the new 3 point restriction that NM has put in place? When I first heard of it I thought that it was a good change, and I still think that. Unfortunately, what I didn't consider was all the fork horns that would get shot and then left behind. Well, now that the deer seasons are winding down, I am hearing reports from hunters that have come across forkhorns that were killed and left behind. I know of one hunting party that ran across 2 dead forkhorns during a 3 day hunt. Think about that for a second. I wonder how many illegal bucks met their end this year?? I wonder what the hunters that shot them did the rest of the hunt. Who knows, it's possible that somone could have gone out and killed more than one deer. Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to say that it is a bad restriction to have in place. I am just constantly reminded of the poor quality of people that are roaming the woods. Now I realize that stuff happens, but even though someone may try and justify it by saying that "they couldn't tell if it was legal or not," but that excuse certainly doesn't fly. The first thing they teach you in hunter safety class is not to shoot unless you are absolutely sure of your target.

I believe that in the long run, this new restriction could prove to be beneficial, but at the same time, it is frustrating to see that for every good thing one tries to do for the good of the species, we have to experience the bad first.

the area i usd to hunt had a 4 points or better restriction. we used to see lots of mature deer. they lifted it about 10 years ago, and the hunting has been crap ever since. i would imagine there are some illegal bucks killed. maybe if they played with the punishment for violations some, they could reduce that. maybe a illegal buck costs you 50 bucks, but you keep the meat, and dont lose hunting priveleges. wanton waste brings 20-life. dont know if it would work or not, but people would be more likely to get that 2 point out of the woods and go home.

Thats why Utah got rid of the 3- point or better restrictions. There was way to many people who would shoot then count.

CA tried the same thing in some areas too, and quit because too many forkies were left to rot. I think it is a good idea, but in reality will not accomplish reducing harvest or making more trophy bucks. Reducing tags is the best way to accomplish that, meaning fewer get to hunt. Less revenue will mean higher tag prices. Tough but true.
