Some honest ideas and or advice

I am looking for some honest ideas of good wintering grounds for photographing mule bucks in their wintering areas. I live in remote N. Cali and our mule deer herds are seriously depleting due to unreal mountain lion population and drought. I am not looking for anyones "secret spot" just a few good places to visit for a hopeful trip through Nev., Utah, Wym, and hopefully Utah to photograph some dandy's. I am not one of those "National Geographic bunny hugger envioro type photographers." I am a timberfalling contractor from the Pac. N. West who just has a passion for mule bucks. Thanks for your efforts.

Canon when passing threw or whatever your doing stop and talk to the locals when you are there. Some will let you know where they are or F&G might. Just a thought. Just get them talking then say you take pics and was wondering where you could get some pics of them.

Cannon,

Where ever you plan on driving to, just take some back roads or off the main roadways and see what you find. I did this same thing back in Jan. 2002 and drove out to Wyo. and skirted the edge of Utah, Idaho and then into Wyo. got footage on video and took a lot of pictures. Have fun, stay legal and depending on what time of year, wear warm clothing.
Meaning of staying legal, don't harass the game, as they will be trying to store energy for the winter. Don't drive off the main back road, DON'T make you own roads.

Thanks for eveyones words.
I took a trip to Wyoming in Jan of 02' as well. Unfortunatly they had not gotten the storms we had out west and the animals were still up high. Did get some stuff. Some of it can be seen at: www.jashareynoldsphotography.com
That is me and my site.
I spend all my time on backroads I will find major crossings and park and hike. I would rather hike up the steepest draw and get a picture of a forked horn deer than ride a four wheeler to a peak and get a snapshot of a B&C record deer. Thats the kind of hunter/photographer I am. There is major satisfaction in working hard for my goals.
I am aware of all the Boy Scout stuff and I avoid tresspassing and dissrespecting others property as well as respecting the animals and their territory.

Go to colorado!!! The deer and elk have already started to filter into the lower valley fields. So many you probably wont believe it. Lots of snow!! I could give you some ideas where to go.

Canon500mm,
A little FYI about what you said in your above post about hiking around. In Wyoming if you are hiking around during the winter time on the winter ranges it can and will get you in trouble. There are many spots that are closed to human presence from Nov 15 till April 30. You have to be careful. And i wouldn't recommend walking out there on open winter ranges either as this is a hard time for the mule deer. If you spook them on accident it could be enough to get you for harrassing wildlife. You are better off to stay in your truck during the winter time. Summer time you can hike your but off. Also a new law went in effect about filming etc on public land, you have to get the right permit now if you are looking to sell these pics in the future.

Nice website, heres mine:

Good luck in finding some critters! The snow is going to be pretty deep in Jan.
