Freetos...

Thanks for posting that...I was actually hoping it was just a nasty rumor. Losing his firearm priviledges for life should be just the tip of the iceberg in penalties for that little snotnose brat.

skin the little bastard alive and leave him for the coyotes

Anonymous tip, I don't think so, the kid called the game warden himself to have the deer scored.

Has anyone taken into account the life of the boy in question, what's his background, accomplishments, upbringing. I don't think the young lads life should be ruined over a stinking deer, big rack or not. If he had killed a doe who would have cared.

The deer had a realistic life expentency of 8-12 years if everything went in his favor. The boy has a life expentency many times that. At least someone may have started him in the right direction(at least he was intersted in hunting) maybe they didn't have the chance to finish the job. There are so many different scenarios that would shed differing lights on the incident.

Was it right...no! Was it his chance to prove himself to an abusive father or possible a chance to fullfill a direction that wasn't clearly defined because of his fathers early passing, Who knows? Until I know ALL the details I will not be quickly passing judgement on this kid. I have rushed to judgement before only to be embarrassed by my lack of campassion.

Fritos, gitos, belitos who cares, I'm sure the deer had no idea what a deer license was or what area he was in, to him dead is dead whether it be legal, illegal, car, disease, accident whatever.

Many on this site have at some time broken game laws and gotten away with it. How many here unselfishly take a youngster under their arm to show them the right way. This kid didn't fail us, we failed him.

The hunting sport we love is destined for destruction if we don't bring youth into the fold of our tradition.

though i would have liked to have seen a legal hunter take that buck i find some statements from people unsettling....read...

As this year?s deer season approached, many DCD workers were certain Freetos would meet his demise.
?All during the archery, muzzle loader and rifle hunt, (Freetos) teased many a hunter who knew that he had the habit of going off (DCD property) in an adjacent alfalfa field,? duckdog1 wrote. ?But no one was ever able to catch him. So, as the seasons ended, we took a sigh of relief and set back to watching him ...?

?Officers Hammond and Schlappi told the Tooele Transcript-Bulletin this week that they apprehended the killer of Freetos ?through an anonymous tip.?

Tooele County is a large area to patrol,? Hammond said. ?It's impossible for one or two wildlife officers to be everywhere. While most people don't realize it, poaching happens every single day. We catch the poachers through tips from the public.?
He added that people who poach animals may not even go out with the idea of doing something illegal.
?A lot of people just go out to the desert to hunt rabbits or to shoot clay pigeons or other targets,? Hammond explained. ?It may not be their initial intent to poach. But too often people may start drinking or just messing around and if an antelope or deer is near, they'll shoot it.?
He added that two years ago, 12 antelope were poached in Tooele County in a single night. Hammond said that while some poachers reside in Tooele County, many come to this area from the Wasatch Front.
?A lot of people come out to Tooele County because we have a lot of desert and open space,? he said. ?Because the area is so large, they figure they can do whatever they want without encountering law enforcement officials. Tooele County is just a big playground to a lot of people. In addition to protected wildlife they often shoot emergency sirens, fences and other items, causing thousands of dollars of damage. They also often leave garbage strewn everywhere, causing people to say, ?Oh, look what the hunters have done to our canyons

Sometimes the best kind of love you can show a kid like that is through tough love. If you let him walk with a minimal penalty you have allowed him to find that he can get away with things like this. I hope that his life is not ruined over a deer but I hope that he is taught and learns a very tough and valuable lesson.

You are right manny, many of those quotes are disturbing. I read the article with interest thinking this kid is an rotten turd and he is, not to mention just plain stupid.

When one looks past the poaching incident and to the comments made by the officers concerning "everyday" behavior, it makes me wonder what kind of people the hunting community is. It is hard to find a friendly, helpful, face out there.

One famous deer was poached, hundreds of other not-so-famous incidents occur daily. The comments are true.

Merry Christmas! :) You got my spirit up Pile.

well said, and I agree, it seems you have used your wisdom in answering this issue but many here talk the tuff guy crap out of anger (Lynchmob mentality) which I feel is dangerous hunter's already have a reputation of being KILLER'S!...

I assure you by the time court comes around the kid won't be laughing, and hopefully his parents have disaplined him by now, but I read nothing about a Dad ibeing in the picture, if my son had brought home a buck like that on his own I would have wanted to know every detail posible, so I don't think the kid has a father figure handy....

ok ok ok, maybe my comment was based more on anger than rational thought. regardless, i hope he gets a lot more than probabtion and community service. he does still need to be punished.

How many drinking idiots, let a lone "stealthy" poachers get away with it for everyone apprehended? It's kind of like guessing how many "enrons" are not discovered? My guess is 10%.
