Manny, I don't think anyone here wants wildlife crimes to outweigh rape and murder. I think most of us are just happy they are finally sticking it to the people that are stealing from the land and giving hunters a bad rap.

Very well put idahonative, we are not trying to justify stronger penalties for poachers than those given to murderers/rapists etc. All we want is the "slap on the wrist" judgements to go away. We need to deter poachers. Without consequences to suffer, these guys are allured every year.

Criminals that harm other people usually have lawyers representing them, the legal system to protect them...the list goes on. There are reasons these violent criminals don't get maximum sentencing, a lot has to do with how our states look on the death penalty, etc etc. Texas has it right in my opinion.

A template needs to be set with strict sentencing for poaching. Heavy fines and hard time given to poachers start modeling that template that helps other courts follow and spread the word that POACHING IS A SERIOUS CRIME!

idahonative set the record by stating that poachers not only harm wildlife, but also give us ethical and moral sportsmen a bad name.

There is no telling what goes through a judges head when he sentences someone. But I'm sure that this guys record had a lot to do with him getting as hard a sentence as he got. If this kid that poached the buck up in Utah has a clean record, he is going to get off easier.

My wife used to worked with a guy that tried to commit suicide by driving his car off a cliff but a cop ended up stopping him. In the process of stopping him, the cop got gravel spun up on him by the car tires. Well this was almost 5 years ago and this guy is still in prison. The charges were aggrivated assault. Explain that.
