What is the best product to use?

I have been reading and trying to learn how to do my own taxidermy as a hobby and I think I am ready to try it. Is Krowtann 2000 a good tanning product or is there better? I am building a saw dust tumbler to clean the cape after it is tanned. an other help would be great thank you.

trackndeer,

To answer your question yes there are better tans out there
but krowtann will get the job done and much easier to use,
if you go to taxidermy.net you can get all kinds of info on krowtann

The type of tan used is not nearly as important as the quality of shaving done on the skin. Any tanning agent designed for taxidermy purposes will work. BUT, you must shave the skin properly and evenly if you want the hide to turn out as well as it should. It might be better to send your hides to a tannery until you're fully aware of what you're getting into. NOT to discourage you, but it is a lot of work.

Give tanning a try. It's not that bad. The most important part of tanning is the pickling process. A lot of newbies want to skip that step. Don't. Not only does it plump up the skin so it's easier to shave, it takes all the non-tannables out of the skin, and it will last a lot longer. In fact, taxidermist used to mount an animal with just the pickle (I use oxalic acid). What you use on it after the pickle is up to you.

send the cape off and have it commercially tanned . No skiving with a round blade for you to do and it will last longer than a wet tanned cape. Probably be happier with the results in the long run. The wait is the draw back...Just my .02
