Is anyone willing to share some information with me about this hunt. I am thinking of having my wife put in and it would be her first big game hunt. I live in Central which is fairly close to the unit. I want to do my homework before she puts in for the draw. I have some pretty good bird dogs and I would definately take someone out for a chukar or quail hunt in return for info, if that would help. Thanks.

Shummy-

Are you referring to the Deep Creeks out by Caleo/Ibapah?

I was thinking a little more south, near Indian Peaks or even further west near panaca and pioche only on the Utah side.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-02-08 AT 11:39AM (MST)[p]So, do you have one tied to a tree for her? Is Caleo that far south? It's been a while since I was there.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-02-08 AT 11:57AM (MST)[p]I thought that Pine Valley was a seperate Unit (I live in Central) Are you thinking the new Southwest Desert/ Pine Valley east hunt? I was under the impression that Pine Valley is a low success rate hunt with out many elk. I am looking for a high success rate to keep her interested and I would also like to stay relatively close so i can take my 6 and 7 year old boys along and make it a family hunt. Thanks for the help guys!

ETA: I'll check out the Hamblin Valley!

The wife and I hunted this unit a few years ago. We went over by Enterprise and headed north to Indian Peaks area. It is a tough hunt. It is one of the few cow elk hunts that I didnt fill my tag. We hunted the late December season. I have heard that you have better luck if you take one of the earlier seasons. The country is really thick, hard to glass and not many roads. I wouldnt advise it unless you are have about 4 days straight to spend because it takes a while to get into them. And, when you find them, they run into the next time zone.

I appreciate the help that all of you have offered both by PM and on the open board. My offer still stands, if you want to do an upland game hunt let me know and I'll put something together.

Shummy,
The best way to kill a cow on the Southwest Desert is to get your wife a Muzzleloader or archery tag and hunt cows during the deer hunt. They are a lot easier to find in Sept. than Nov.

shummy sept is the best cause the elk are talkin find a screamin bull and chances are you have your cow as well i dunno if thats what they were refering to but that would be my best guess

Don't waste your time!!! The only cows that are left out there are on the Indian Peak Reservation and you can't hunt that on the cow hunt anyways. The state has let the cow hunters about kill them all off(MORE TAGS EACH YEAR), I think the bulls are starting to turn homo. Picked up alot of sheds this year with no sign off fighting, or they just have no cows to fight over.

If you have a valid deer tag for the southern region and a cow tag you can hunt your cow during the deer season with the weapon that coincides with the deer hunt. The muzzleloader hunt is by far the easiest time to find the cows.

Shummy,

It would actually be a very good unit to hunt with your wife. The unit is huge. I drew a management tag last year and hunted the second week of november and could have killed a cow every day right off the side of a road. The cow hunt was only a week after my hunt. Most of the elk move completely out of the areas they were in during the archery and limited entry hunts. That being said I saw over a hundred cows over 4 days last year. There are tons of bulls out there too. I bet I saw as many bulls as I did cows (not exagerating). The bull to cow ratio in some areas out there is very high. PM me if you want more info on the areas that I hunted. I am sure you could get your wife onto a cow fairly easy.

Igottabigone;
Your full of Crap!!! I'll jump in with you this year and split the gas so it will only be $2.00 a gallon and I'll show you 15 plus bulls fighting over 6 cows(IN MOST AREA'S) and then you can show me your ratio, besides the reservation ,cause I know it's good in that area.

I've seen cows off of the reservation, I've just never tried to hunt them, so I don't buy that argument. Most of the info I have recieved has been positive and I'm glad to have recieved it.

I would agree that the bull cow ratio is less than 2 cows to 1 bull. But there are a ton elk and neither one are hard to find. You can't kill 50 bulls, and 200 cows on average the last 10 years and not have those kind of ratios.

Are there Indians on the reservation? I didn't think white men could hunt indian ground. I second bragabit. I don't understand the cow tags out there. I think the ratio is 1 to 1 easey. What you really need is a horse tag. When they ruin your hunt you will wish you had a tag for one.

peakfreak you ain't lying my friend ..... f'n horses are taking over everything. It's BS that they "the feds" protect a non-native species like the stinking nags. Put them in the same catagory as coyotes and dump 'um when you see 'um. Just my humble opinion.

With a Minersville tag I still think you can kill up too 12 horses a year?? right???

Those mustangs never die. You can find the most ugly, hot, dry place out there and there will be horse sign. They love the burns and you will see more horses than elk so take your lariat too.
