I was wondering what the restictions are for using a quad in Colorado. Can you use one to pack out an elk? In Az we can go in and pack out our elk on a quad as long as you go straight in and straight back out. I was wondering if you can do the same in Co.?

No ,I am told that a new law was passed and you can't retrieve animals or drive in motorized restricted area or will be fined and maybe have hunting points against you! Be careful!

that is correct there are not many places where atv's are even accessable.most public areas fore early and first to second seasonhunting may have limited access for the first portion of trails. and are for trails only . meanning atv's can be used to get in and out only and there is usually posted limits and restrictions. its nothing like arizona..

And the max width on ATV's that travel on an ATV trail is 50 inches, which eliminates 99% of the side by sides. This does not apply if you use them on a regular jeep road.

Check the back cover of the Colorado proclamation. It says that starting this year you have to have a Colorado OHV permit. If a nonresident registered in another state you still need Colorados OHV permit.

Brought my quad elk hunting the last two years and I have decided its not worth the effort. I legally ran around on forest roads two days before the season opened, parked it at camp on Friday night and loaded it up the following Wednesday afternoon. (located areas of interest, parked it and did a lot of scouting using my boots) Will not bring it for this years hunt. Just not worth the effort and extra gas it takes to bring it in the area I hunt in.

Depending on the area you are going to in Colorado, it may be best to leave your ATV at home. If you decide to bring it with you, the Colorado OHV tag is easy to obtain and only costs $15. They send it the day after you order it and it's good for a year (March to March) You ordered it from the Parks & Recreation website which a link can be found on the CDOW site under the OHV information.
