No experience but i know you can use them during the Archery season in Wyoming.

correct. I killed a ton of whitetails with a crossbow and it would be real hard to elk hunt with one. One big draw back to the cross bow is that once you raise it to shoot off hand it is hard to hold still. Kinda like waving a mirror at game. They will pick you off because of that slight movement trying to hold it still. Of course the advantage would be they won't see you pull back your bow. They sure are hard to carry. If I used one to elk hunt I'd want to be in a tree stand for sure and not on foot. Also, they are less accurate as far as I'm concerned.

Ok heres the scoop. Im hunting archery in wyo and my 12 yr old son has a tag too. I wasnt going to let him hunt until rifle season and then someone mentioned a crossbow. He'd be in a blind 20-30 yards from a waterhole with a rest. Its not like he'd be lugging it all over the mountains. Let me know what your experience with crossbows is ? Gary

get him a nice bow and put a drawlock on it then he can keep shooting the bow any where when he is big enough.

Excellent advice!

There is a guy down the road here in AZ that is in his upper 70s that qualified as a disabled hunter last year. He can't shoot a rifle because it will tear his heart valve and had to quit using a bow due to either the same injury or another. Anyways last year he was drawn for bull elk in unit 6a and was successful. He shot a 5 point at 40 yards and had a pass through. He never did find his bolt after the shot. He claims that he can shoot almost a hundred yards with it accurately. In my opinion that gives you an unfair advantage to a person who is not disabled. But I am glad that this person still gets the opportunity to hunt.

Do not quote me but I think most states only allow xbows for elk during rifle seasons, except WY where you can hunt bow. I could be wrong. A crossbow is way more then powerfull enough and accurate enough for elk, as said above they are unfair vs handheld bows, huge difference IMO. Here in Ohio xbows and legal for all of bow season. I too have heard guys say 100 yards is doable (not that I agree - but the point is accuracy and energy wise they are unreal). I do think guys who have health issues should be allowed to use them. Youth I can see too, I wonder if most kids can shoot a powerful enough bow to get the job done - interesting idea. I normally not a xbow fan but in this situation it might not be a bad idea.

Well, I agree. Im just not a crossbow fan but in this case I cant think of a better idea really. I believe you need to pull a minimum of 55-60 lbs draw weight to hunt elk (thats my opinion and you arent going to change it) and he cant pull that much at 12 yrs old. A crossbow just seems like a good way to go right now. Has anyone here had experience hunting elk with them ? Thanks Gary
