and I would like to take him west this fall. He's grown up hunting whitetails and I think a mule deer trip would be great for both of us. Idaho has the reduced mentored tags, so I was looking that way. I'm a carpet layer, so money is an object. Does anyone have some general areas to suggest? We will be tentig and would prefer public land as I will assume that private is as hard to find there as it is here in Minnesota. I would rather see lots of deer for him than spend a lot of time looking for a wallhanger. Thank you very much, and Happy New Year to all.

Welcome to MM. Have you ever considered an antelope hunt?
They are a blast to hunt, most areas in the west have good numbers of animals, there is action all day long, they are beautiful animals, and you can do it yourself for a very reasonable price.
I'm not trying to turn you away from mule deer, just thinking that that for your son's first trip out west you would see more animals, have more action, and find easier and better land access than a muley hunt.
Just my opinion. What part of MN you from?
Good luck.

Yes, I have been thinking about antelope also. My wife and I did that back in the 80's in Montana and Wyoming. We live in Kelliher, just south of Upper Red Lake on the map. The crappie fishing is starting pretty good. It took a while for the lake to freeze this year. Next year the walleye fishing will re-open, and it will be phenominal. Untill then, we have to make do with 13"+ crappies. I guess we could have worse problems. HUGE pike, also. Thanks for your time, if you get up this way look me up. I'm the guy who makes muskie baits in town.

Thunderhead, I will have to second the antelope idea. I hunted antelope in SouthWest Wyoming in 1993 and had a ball. Saw plenty of game to make the trip fun. Wherever you choose to go, look into both antelope and deer seasons going on at the same time. fatrooster.

I live in Fargo ND now, but I grew up and still have a cabin by Gonvick, MN. I've been through Keliher many times, played high school sports against you guys too. I've fished Red Lake several times for walleye before they shut it down, crappie too......tasty little critters. Two years ago we were up there crappie fishing and my buddy caught about a 6 lb. walleye. It was sure nice to see something that big still in there, nice to see him go back down the hole too. :)
Take care and let us know how the muley/antelope hunt progresses. If I get through your area again this winter, I'll look you up. Fishing us just something I do when I can't go hunting. :)

Thunderhead,
If you want to hunt out west for a reasonable amount of money, you have to play the drawing game. I would suggest joining Carters Hunter Services for drawing information.
Also, as an avid Michigan muskie hunter, I'm interested in hearing more about your muskie baits, shoot me an email.
