Well its 4 days until the Jan. Mule deer hunt and I cant wait so I will ask a question to make the time go by. Anyone try kings desert shadow. I have it and like it although it fades pretty fast. It blends in very well for the country I hunt. I also use some of the predator patterns

I love the pattern but the quality of the garmet sucks! Like you said it fades really quickly. The fading is noticible after only 2 or 3 washes. Also the pants are wearing fast and the fabric surface is getting matted up into little balls. Mine are made by Hidden Mesa, and if you ask me, Kings needs to can them and get better quality. A pattern that good should have the quality to match.

Well I agree, I wore the pants during a 9 day deer hunt last year and now they aren't worth wearing.

I hunted with a guy this year that had the full matching set of Kings camo. I was a little jealous of his head-to-toe matching gear. I was using my usual hodge-podge of stuff that doesn't match. My shirt was some eastern pattern, too dark I thought, my pack was something similar but lighter color, blue jeans for pants. He and I went on a stalk together and the guys who were watching from a distance said he stuck out like a sore thumb and that I was nearly impossible to see unless I was moving. I didn't believe them until the next day when he was hiking on another ridge in the sun and I watched him. He practically glowed! I don't really think that's unique to Desert Shadow. I guess the key is that to appear broken up you have to be broken up. A large rock or bush is way easier to see than a bunch of small ones.

Just my thought.

Well said Bighorn, I would have to agree based on a lesson my uncle taught me once. The night before the hunt my son was wearing a lighter, tan-colored, hat. He said "you're not going to wear that hunting are you? "That's the same color as deer's hind end and you'll stand out like a sore thumb."

What he said make's a lot of sense, since whitetails use their easy-to-spot-tails as a warning to other deer, it make sense that muley's would keep track of each other by watching for white patches as well.

Anyway, when I see some of these lighter cammo patterns they just look waaaay to light for me. I think they should rename that pattern "Desert Daylight" instead of "Desert Shadow". It's nice pattern, just too light.

In regards to the lighter color I agree with everyone, I use the desert shadow when I am hunting the P.J. and scrub oak. It blends in very very well, but if I am hunting regular Pinion and Juniper I will switch over to my predator. But for the scrub oak it blends in great. A lot of the country I hunt is scrub oak with Pinion and Juniper, The desert shadow blends in well but once your out of the oak it's a whole new story.

It may be too light for timbered areas, but this stuff disappears in sage and open desert scrub. I wore it this year in Wyoming's open country for antelope, in the open canyons of NW Texas for muleys and at home here in So. Cal for mule deer. It blended in perfectly. I agree that for the most part camo patterns are just hype. Anything that breaks up your outline will work just fine. But Desert Shadow works great in the terrain it was designed for. It's name is "Desert" for a reason. I don't think it is too light at all (at least before it fades too much). In fact I find most patterns too dark for where I hunt.

If you wear Kings You will GLOW!!! I had no idea until I was invited along on an Arizona Strip hunt, the 295" monster trip. We were all in position on various knolls....Back in camp every one of the others there commented about seeing me GLOW! For the most part I sat still next to HuntSonora glassing. I still looked like a flourecent bulb......I would think about another brand, Desert Shadow looks good on the shelf though.

I agree, especially the part about how fast it fades after even washing it in cold water. I think it would make a great wall paper for the den. HA

With any of that sage style camo you will GLOW. Take a look at yourself on video from a distance of 200 yards and you'll be shocked. A good example is the sage camo the guys had on in Lowland Mulies 2. From a distance they almost seemed to be wearing lime green/white flourescent. Part of the problem is the nature of cotton camo and its reflective properties especially after being washed. Wool camo is the best followed by a polar fleece material of some sort.

I agree dont really care for the craftsman ship of the Kings, I found a great little company called everywearwest and have used it for 3 years now quality is great and the patterns are just awesome, the only draw back is it is hard to find. they do have a website with pics though. I just like any pattern that is broken up you blend in alot more that way.

Buckspy

The King of Colorado has watch my videos! That makes my week!

I couldn't agree more with the statement you made about the cotton and polyester combo. the sun reflects off of this sort of combination, It also has a little to do with the dies and the process used to color the garment.

Light natural reflects off of light colors and is absorbed by darker colors. These camo manufactures need to take that into consideration and choose a material that absorbs light.

I do believe kings outdoor world and desert shadow are currently working on this issue.

Buck Nuts,

I about fell over when Derek coind the phrase "Pooh on a white horse", that was HILARIOUS! I am still stoked about getting to meet all of you guys.

This is a funny post and not one the camo manufacturers enjoy very much.

Poo on a white horse! LMAO Drum! Don't sit on any cactus unless you've got friends with you that will pull spines out of your hairy bare-ass with tweezers.

I only made your week Steve? I was trying for a month or so.

Just curious, you guys who dont like Desert Shadow or the sage types, what do you like?

I also really like Natural Gear and Predator Deception.

Theres a lot of good camo out there. The best I have found is by Everywear West Camouflage in Buffalo Wyo. I have used this camo for four years now. I have hunted in Utah, Wyo and South Dakota. It blends into all terrian from open grass, sagebrush, rocks and heavy timber. They have a couple color shades and the best snow camo I have ever seen. The material is a brushed twill poly cotton fabric. Double reinforced knee, elbow and butt areas. I wash mine turned inside out and they have faded bery little in four years. Give them a try I think you will be happy.

I forwarded my response to the desert shadow. I would post the response but it is at the house. Anyway they are working a new line of stuff, new material, and are trying to correct the problem of fading.

This is a good pattern. Of course it isn't designed for every terrain in the western united states, I have looked at the everywhere west camo it looks very good but it would not work for the country I hunt. my opinion

For my money, I like the Sage Country by Brushhunter. I agree that Kings is a sweet pattern but doesn't hold up for long.

I think that Kings camo is pretty, but I don't think it is that effective. I have a sagebrush camo jacket because I like it, but when I hunt I like to wear a wool camo with lots of brown and/or grey. I also like the outfitter pattern that cabelas has, it is a good mix of lights and darks and helps break up your outline. Overall I think that camo is overrated, stay in the shadows, stay off the skyline, wear dull colors, don't move too fast and you'll be fine.

here is the reply from Kings.

Thanks for your email and 2 cents. We appreciate your comments and letting us know what is going on. The most important thing is to get you taken care of. We stand behind our product and I don't want you to think you are getting a raw deal. If you are having problems with the camo I am willing to work something out with you. Just to let you know we have been working hard on developing an exciting new line of Desert Shadow as far as the clothing and printing process is concerned. For 2005, we will be releasing a new line of clothing that is not on cotton or twin material. Also, the printing of the pattern we are using is a different process that makes the pattern sharper and more embedded in the material for an overall quality increase for wear and tear. The twill materials have limitations
