does anyone hunt the moffat county are in CO.? i hear the quality of the bucks aren't the greatest but there are alot in the mid 20" range,do they have the rifle hunt during the rut?

My first hunt out of state was just outside of Craig, Moffat Co., Colo back in 1976. Hunted a few other times around that area and the last time was back in 1996 at Maybell area.
I'm sure others here can help you more than I can.

I have guided in that approx. area for a long time. I would agree that the vast majority of the mature bucks are probably in the low to mid 20's. But everyone knows spread doesn't account as much as tine length. Have taken some really deep forked bucks that went 170-190. Don't let it fool you with the reports of narrow deer because there have been some absolute pigs taken as well. Two years ago we took three bucks that were 190+ and wide in a week span. Most of the deer don't live past 4 1/2 years if there lucky to make it that far. Loads of public hunters. Better chances of taking a quality buck if you can find private ground. Hope it helps a little.

I had a muzzle tag for unit 10 on blue mountain west of Maybell. Not a ton of deer but we saw 40 or so a day, I was able to take a very nice 5 x 5 that was 33" wide. Most of the bucks we saw were 20" to 24" wide and a couple around 27 or bigger.

Just to answer your questions, there are plenty of deer in that area and the average bucks are 20" to 24" deer. They have the last season for deer in the first week of november so you can hunt the first part of the rut. It is usually the best season for deer in these parts. And don't let anybody tell ya there are no nice deer cuz there are some, just have to pass on the average bucks and hunt hard and be lucky to get one.
